It’s rarely cold down south, but every once in a while there is a storm with frigidly cold temperatures.
Last year we had a storm during the winter and the outdoor temperatures were cold enough to snow.
The unusually cold temperatures were hard on the heat pump. A couple of times, my wife and I were worried that the heat pump would stop working. After the seasonal storm was over, my wife and I decided it was a good idea to call the heating company to check on the heat pump. Everything worked well during the storm, but we still had some problems. My wife called the HVAC company and she made an appointment with a repair technician. The guy came to the house to perform a tune-up on the heat pump. At this time, my wife and I found out that our heat pump was not cycling to the defrost mode correctly. The defrost mode keeps the heat pump from completely freezing. My wife and I decided to repair the problem with the heat pump just in case we had any other winter storms with unusually cold temperatures. The repair was significant, but the HVAC technician told my wife and I that we should not have any other problems with the heat pump for a long time. Everything inside of the machine looked great and things were working just like they should. He also noted that the evaporator coils looked brand new even though the machine is almost six years old. I thought that was great news considering the fact that we use the AC a lot more than the heat pump.
