Four Tips to Save on Your Heating and Cooling Bill

Whenever it gets extremely hot or extremely cold you can always hear people complaining about how much it costs to run the heating and cooling system.

I have learned over the years various ways to save money when it comes to air conditioning.

First of all, turn to your windows. If you have old windows with gaps and who knows what else, it might be time for new windows. Technology improves every aspect of life, and windows are no exception. Overtime Windows has been getting more and more efficient. If you are still using Windows from the 1960s or 70s or 80s, it is time to think about getting better Windows. If you want to save money on your heating and cooling but don’t want to replace your windows, at least you can either put window film on end or seal up all the cracks around the edges of your windows. This will allow your AC to work less and thereby save you money. Secondly, At this time of year especially, it’s a good idea to turn off your air conditioner at night and open your windows. Ceiling fans, too, make you feel cooler than you actually are. Now I’m not saying you should be unsafe. If it makes you feel unsafe, don’t do it. Thirdly, get a smart thermostat. If you don’t want to spend money on a new thermostat, make sure that every time you leave the house you turn up the thermostat a few degrees so your AC will not have to chill a house that no one is in. Number four, use Ceiling fans.Ceiling fans allow you to set your thermostat a few degrees higher and still feel cool.

High Velocity HVAC is the Answer

My little house, which some people call my dollhouse, was built in 1929. It simply oozes charm. I love it, but unfortunately I do not live in it yet. Instead, I use it as a rental. It’s a long story about how that came about, so I won’t go into it here. Suffice it to say that I moved closer to work, and now I simply do not want to go back to that long commute. Anyway, as all things do, from time to time my house needs maintenance. Recently, that maintenance meant looking into upgrading the HVAC system. I have a central heating and cooling system, just like most people in this general area. I live in the Southeast, so we do not need heavy-duty furnaces that will last through 12 inches of snow. What we need is really great air conditioning! Our thermostats are often set on 70 degrees when outside the thermostats are indicating the natural temperature is close to 3 digits. Imagine how hard an air conditioner must work and how efficient that AC must be in order to keep your home comfortable for you. When my AC came close to the end of its natural life, I started looking for Alternatives and one of those happened to be a high velocity HVAC. I had never heard of such a thing in my life oh, but my AC guy really recommended it for my home. I have had to replace my ductwork twice since I’ve owned my house because it is all in the crawl space underneath and no matter what I seem to do wild animals seem to find a way to get under there and rip up my ductwork. It turns out that High Velocity HVAC is called high velocity because the ductwork is very small in diameter so the air that comes out of the AC vent is really blasted out at a high speed.I took him up on it and I am thrilled with my high velocity heating and cooling.

Wish I could get a heat pump

I wish heat pumps weren’t so expensive.

I hate my current HVAC unit and want to change it out with a heat pump.

Look up the stats on these things, it is extremely impressive. Rather than create heated air, it simply uses it in the existing air. It takes fresh, clean outdoor air and pumps it inside for a heating effect in the winter. For the summertime the reverse happens. You get a constant stream of new air. That means no dirty indoor air conditions or smelly, stuffy air anymore. You also reduce your energy bills quite a bit with this method of heating and air conditioning. They say a heat pump pays back for itself in energy bill savings in under a year. That is good since the initial cost is supremely high. It is shocking when you price check a heat pump with a typical central HVAC unit. It is so much more money and if you want an even better heat pump, more of an installation job. Geothermal heat pumps are way better. They use an underground loop system to get that heat energy. Think about in the wintertime what is warmer, the air outside or the ground temperature. The same goes for cold air in the summertime. It makes sense to bury the unit. It is also neater and less of an eyesore. But now you are digging into the lawn and doing a more complicated HVAC installation job. It isn’t cheap to do this at all. Is a heat pump worth the cost? That is the question I come back to time and time again.

Want to make the switch to zone control

I’m eventually going to have HVAC zone control in my house.

Currently I live with central HVAC which means ductwork is in my ceiling and is a series of metal pathways that lead to each room of the house.

Each opening has a vent cover and that is what provides heating and air conditioning for the whole house. The benefits of a central system is that every room gets an equal share. It is a pretty basic system to get repairs and service on. You never need to worry about replacement parts. I hate it though. I hate dealing with dirty ductwork and icky vents. I also don’t like that the central HVAC unit takes up so much space in my closet. I have a giant hallway closet that only holds the indoor unit and the water heater. I can’t fit a broom, mop or even a bucket in here. It is a waste of space. Someday I am going to do a tankless water heater. Have you ever seen equipment with that type of model? It is so small! I also want ductless mini splits in each room of the house. They serve as the indoor air handlers and free up closet space. With having a unit in each room with a thermostat, I can have zone control. I want zone control because my husband loves AC so much. He constantly is cranking on the air conditioner and making me uncomfortable. I try to sneak in the heat whenever possible. With zone control we each can have our own spaces.

Changing to a ductless unit

For months I was dealing with a ventless heater in my kitchen.

It was a horrible heating system.

One reason was that when it wasn’t operational the heater pooped out cold air. If you sat in the chair across from the heater you were cold the whole dinnertime. When it clicked on it was super loud and not very powerful. I bought the best system I could afford at the time which wasn’t much. I just didn’t want my pipes to freeze. It was a dirty system too. I was constantly using an air compressor to blow out the dust in the system. I felt like every month it was telling me about a clogged air filter. I really did feel that the ventless heater was eventually going to burn my house down. I finally had the money and the ambition to replace it. I wanted something that provided better heat. I landed on a ductless mini split. I had it mounted on my exterior wall and the outdoor unit is hidden behind the house. With this system I actually get both heating and cooling power. It is especially nice if I want to use the oven in the summertime. The ductless heating option is just way better. The kitchen actually feels warm for once. I also freed up floor space by removing it and could put a base cabinet in the kitchen. That section of the kitchen looks so much better now. The ductless HVAC unit is actually quite modern and sleek too. I am glad I made the change over.

Gas fireplace isn’t safe for the baby

I am a couple of months pregnant and I want to change some things before my baby arrives. Right now we use a gas fireplace with a glass front. It shows a faux wood fire and has a big wooden ledge. It is really pretty but not safe at all. The glass is lava hot when you touch it. My husband actually has a scar on his back from when he leaned into the glass while shirtless. My husband thinks putting up a baby gate around it will be enough. I don’t want a toddler or even a four or five year old around that glass though. So will I gate that fireplace for almost ten years? I don’t like the heating system that much. It is also over 15 years old. It is going to die anyway. I have been looking into replacing our old carpet with hardwood floors anyway. I am thinking this would be the perfect time since I could add radiant heating in the process. The heat would be underneath the wood and my baby would be protected. There would be no dusty indoor air quality since it is electric based. Another pro of this system is that anything that touches it gets heated as a result. So the baby’s crib, the cat bed and the couch are all getting heated by this amazing little system. My husband isn’t pleased that he might need to do a major project right before the baby is due. But I think it needs to happen.

Running hotter with pregnancy

Apparently with pregnancy your body’s temperature does increase.

I noticed it immediately.

I am someone who is always cold. When in doubt I turn on the heating system. It is technically late winter, early spring. I should want the heater to continue until the night and early morning. Since I have gotten pregnant, I am so hot. I am constantly trying to turn on the air conditioning. I am using my overhead fan in my bedroom for the first time. It is amazing how something so small is affecting my body that much. I am not even three months along and I am already sweating to death. What am I going to be like in 9 months? I will keep the news from my husband until it is a sure thing. Then I want to surprise him. The jig might be up already. He is very curious as to why my inner temperature is so different. It is really out of character for me to demand AC and the overhead fan. That is usually him at night. To say he is excited about more AC in the household is a vast understatement. He knows there is something internally going on with me. He at first thought I was sick and just running a fever. When I produced no sickness symptoms, he started digging around further. I just need to tide him over two more weeks and then I will tell him. I think the AC is going to do me in though. He is going to guess first.

I like our sunroom now that I have Heating as well as A/C cooling in it

When both of us moved to the south, there were a lot of variations in store for us.

My fiance plus I were both born, raised plus lived all of our lives way up north.

We’re talking so far north that both of us had Winter for nearly 6 weeks out of the year. So moving from all of that Heating as well as A/C heating to a place that hardly needs Heating as well as A/C heating was a giant change for us. It was one of many variations that both of us had to make when both of us chose to live in the south. I’m still getting accustomed to the way people talk. And I have to slow down the way I speak so people can simply understand me. But it’s all been worth it primarily because both of us don’t have to worry about Winter weather any more. There’s no more gas oil furnace plus the temperatures almost never get to the chilly point. All of us do have the need for a bit of Heating as well as A/C heating a few times over the winter. But the heat is a whole other thing. The condo both of us purchased came with a sunroom that was basically not useable for a quarter of the year. However, I had the Heating as well as A/C business come out to install a ductless heat pump in the sunroom so both of us can love sitting out there during the summer. I really don’t use the sunroom that much in the Winter as I like to genuinely be outside. But having the sunroom equipped with Heating as well as A/C cooling makes it comfortable to sit in there during the summer time when going outside is too hot.

Only trust the Heating as well as A/C professionals

I love to save currency as much as the next guy plus maybe even a little bit more.

I was raised to value a dollar plus to get as much value out of every dollar that I spent.

That’s the way our dad was plus that’s the way I am. My dad might have been a giant more drastic about saving currency than I am. He genuinely had a plastic case over the temperature control that he could lock. That’s how intense he was about saving currency. The temperature control was going to stay where it was most economical even if he had to lock it down to make that happen. I’m not quite that intense when it comes to heating plus cooling savings. However, I make sure that the condo is prepped plus ready for the summer time plus Winter extremes. This really does make a huge difference when it comes to heating plus cooling costs. I also make sure that I’m spending currency on Heating as well as A/C maintenance. Preventive maintenance is something I firmly guess in. And I don’t trust the maintenance or maintenance of our Heating as well as A/C unit to anyone but a certified Heating as well as A/C professional. This isn’t a concern since I’ve been with the same Heating as well as A/C business for more than 25 years. In fact, both of us had to update the seasoned Heating as well as A/C unit a few years back. But that seasoned Heating as well as A/C unit ran 23 years without so much as single hiccup when it came to heating plus cooling our home. That’s why I only trust real Heating as well as A/C professionals when it comes to our heating plus cooling equipment.

I love our sunroom now that I have HVAC cooling in it

However, I had the HVAC contractor come out to install a ductless heat pump in the sunroom so we can enjoy resting out there while I was in the summer
