Working out in chilly conditions

It’s the beginning of November, and for the past few weeks, the weather has been chilly and wet.

I switched from loving my workouts outdoors on the back deck to the cramped space inside the house.

I am fortunate to have a spot where I can stretch, weight train, jump rope and perform lunges, squats and ab crunches, it’s kind of tight. I’m always worried about causing damage to something. I realize that Winter is on the way and my opportunity to head outside again is minimal. Today was finally bright and sunny. For the first time in weeks, the forecast wasn’t calling for raining non stop. The skies were blue and the clouds were white. I was so excited to carry my yoga mat, free weights, jump rope, water bottle, phone and cordless speaker onto the deck. I stepped outside and was disappointed by how cold the air felt. There was an aggressive and chilly wind blowing. It was necessary to bundle up in layers to complete an outdoor workout. I put on a thermal long-sleeved shirt under a T-shirt and zip-up hoodie. I wore sweatpants. I still needed to wear my hood up and tie it tight. It was a challenge to get warm and loosen up my joints and muscles. It required some extra time jogging in place, skipping and stretching before I was ready to really exert myself. I always work out for an hour, but this particular workout seemed to last longer than usual. It was discouraging and disappointing. I have accepted the fact that I am going to be stuck inside for the next 6 to 8 months. I would really like to join a gym but the travel time is just too much for me.
