We rented the most remote and reclusive cabin that we could find. It was a forty five minute drive from the rental office, which was located in the garage of the rental agent. The nearest town was over two hours away, which was kind of intimidating for me, but I kept my fears to myself. I am a city boy, born and bred, and fending for myself in the woods did not appeal to me. My girlfriend, however, wanted some place in the middle of nowhere, so that’s what we did for the long weekend. It wasn’t very cold that weekend, but it got chilly at night so we decided to use the wood burning furnace. There were a couple of space heaters in the closet, which was very comforting to have as a backup for heat, but since we were “roughing it” we decided to start a fire first. There was no firewood ready for the furnace, but there was an axe, a hatchet, and a woodpile out back. In the pretty purple light of the setting sun, I stripped off my shirt and chopped firewood for the furnace while my girlfriend watched on. I got hot and sweaty filling up that furnace with kindling and logs, but seeing me act so macho got my girlfriend hot, too! By the end of the weekend we were both huge fans of using the wood burning furnace, and talked about getting one for our place. We never even bothered taking the space heaters out of the closet, we stayed plenty hot!
