I didn’t want to wait until I got married and had a family to buy a house.
I wanted to start thinking about my future before that.
I wanted to be prepared for every step of the journey, with or without another person attached to my last name. As soon as I had enough money for a down payment, I started looking for a place. I knew that I could save money on rent simply by getting a mortgage instead of a lease. I didn’t know if I was going to spend the rest of my life in this particular place, but I knew that I would be building equity in the house instead of throwing my money down the drain to the landlord. My first house was a three bedroom and two bathroom fixer upper. I wanted to make some renovations and I had money in the budget to do anything that I wanted. I chose to make renovations to the master bathroom and bedroom first. Inside of the master bathroom, I put a claw-footed tub and a spa. I also put heated flooring in the bathroom and the master bedroom. The heated flooring was an extravagant expense, but one of my friends is an AC and heating contractor. The guy gave me wholesale prices on all of the materials and rock bottom prices on the installation fees. The master bedroom and bathroom are easily one of the nicest features in the house. The master bedroom is larger than most other homes in the neighborhood and I have the only place with an indoor spa.
