My aunt invited me to her church while I visited her for a quick weekend trip.

Though I don’t frequent churches and it had been quite a while, I obliged because I didn’t want to be rude and reject my aunt’s request.

I woke up that Sunday morning, got dressed, and off to church I went for the 11:00 AM service. While I walked through the aisle of the church trying to locate a place to sit, I noticed a few older women using hand-held church fans. This church had a central air conditioning unit, so I was a bit surprised to see the ladies using those church fans. The fans were made with wooden handles with thick stock paper stapled to them. The image on the stock paper showcased the name of the church as well as a picture of the church building. Seeing this made me smile because church fans were used many years ago to provide some relief to church goers during the warm Summer months prior to the days when air conditioners were readily available to the general public. Today, most churches have a cooling system installed, some have HVAC units while others rely on smaller window A/Cs, perhaps some use industrial-sized fans. But it is amazing that the hand-held church fan, an old invention, is still being used today in church buildings that have air conditioning technology. As mentioned, the women were older, so they became acclimated to using these fans, and therefore, the church fans became part of their church experience. I saw the fans as a great way to advertise the church as they could be used to recruit new members. Turns out, this was in fact another purpose of these church fans to provide advertisement for various businesses. Perhaps, I should have requested a few of those hand- held fans for my friends and family to promote and advertise my aunt’s church.

Have you ever walked into a warm building after being outside in extremely cold weather? It usually feels amazing as your body welcomes the warmth while you quickly remove the layers of clothing and become comfortable.

However, after an hour, you realized the temperature of the room had steadily increased and became unbearable.

After many complaints about headaches because the room was too hot, you decided to send someone to investigate, and they discovered that the temperature in the building was a whopping 87 degrees. Oh no, that was too hot for a building whose windows couldn’t open, and no one in the building could figure out how to troubleshoot the issue because the technology on the smart HVAC system is a bit more complicated. Your only options were to call the commercial HVAC provider and schedule a service appointment, close the building for the day, and send everyone home. This happened at the school of a family member, and the HVAC service provider sent their technicians to the school to diagnose the problem. Apparently, the chiller, which is a machine that is used to regulate the temperature in the HVAC system by cooling down the heat, experienced a malfunction, hence the reason for the rapid increase in the temperature of the building. The service technicians scrambled to locate the necessary parts to fix the issue, however on first attempt, those parts failed, and they had to return the next day. The technicians ordered additional parts and performed more service, and they finally fixed the chiller, and the temperature in the building was regulated once again. It took 2 days to get the smart HVAC system up and running, but fortunately for the faculty, they were able to quickly switch to homeschooling. Technology has certainly improved our lives by creating less interruptions, the students didn’t miss school and most of the faculty were happy that they did not have to commute to work on those days.

Some years ago, I lived in an apartment that was built in 1999 and though it was an older condo, the place was beautiful and newly renovated.

It was a two bedroom, two bathroom unit with hardwood floors, and the living room overlooked a pond that faced the west, which provided the perfect view for immaculate sunsets.

I really enjoyed living in that space, but unfortunately it came with one major caveat. The HVAC system was old and required constant maintenance, frankly, it needed to be replaced. But my landlord opted to have the unit serviced many times instead. It became a consistent issue especially during the Summers when the air conditioner would stop efficiently cooling the apartment. The A/C technician had to service the system every 3 months and as a result we became acquainted because we saw each other on so many occasions during the year. After numerous service calls, the A/C technician was able to convince my landlord to replace the HVAC system. I was convinced that I would finally have a perfectly functioning air conditioning unit. Unfortunately, within 2 months of replacement, the unit needed service again. After further investigation, the HVAC technician concluded that the unit was losing freon due to a faulty line, a problem that he failed to diagnose on his previous service visits. My landlord was aware of this issue, but the cost would have been enormous, so instead of investing more money to rectify the problem, he decided that it was time to sell the condominium. Fortunately for him, he avoided additional HVAC issues and costs, but I assume the new owners eventually had to invest in getting the lines repaired. I miss living in that condo, the magical sunsets were worth the sacrifice of dealing with those air conditioning woes.

I love the Fall because the weather begins to change and becomes a bit cooler outside.

Fall is also the beginning of the long-awaited holiday season, that time of year where we cozy up under blankets, spend time with our loved ones while we indulge in delicious foods. One of my favorite things about Fall is that I have the chance to wear scarves, sweaters, and boots for a few weeks out of the year. I get really excited about wearing these items because I believe Fall clothing is extremely fashionable and I love them. Living in an area that experiences warm and tropical climate, I welcome the change in temperature during that time of year. In addition, Fall means that I can increase the temperature of the thermostat on my air conditioner because the temperature outside is a lot cooler. Furthermore, there are always a few days where the temperature drops below the norm, so I can avoid using the HVAC system altogether. Currently, it has been 15 days since I last used my air conditioner, and I am positive that I will see a drastic change in my energy bill. Typically, my energy company emails me a summary of my energy usage, and the last email I received showed a significant decrease in the amount that I will pay for the month. It dropped by a whopping 30%, how awesome is that? I am excited for the savings because we experienced a severely hot Summer where I used my air conditioner more than usual which caused above average energy usage and incurred higher energy costs. I could use my 30% savings to purchase some new fashionable Fall clothing, but instead I will use it to reimburse my HVAC technician for an appointment I have at the beginning of the new year. I’m circulating the money that I’m saving from my energy bill in a responsible way.

The room was nice and comfortable, toasty but not too hot

Every Christmas, I visit my parents’ house and stay for about a week and return home after the new year. It has become tradition to spend Christmas at their home because I prefer the colder weather during the holiday. Sometimes I wish for snow, I dream of having that white Christmas, but that hasn’t happened in a while. There are 3 bedrooms located upstairs in my parents’ house and one of which is located above the garage. That particular room has very little insulation so it is usually freezing in the Winter. Therefore, it becomes difficult to manage the heat when we have a house full of people. If the thermostat is set to 76 degrees, the room over the garage is comfortable, but the 2 additional bedrooms get extremely warm and end up feeling like furnaces. My room usually becomes unbearable to sleep in, so typically, I turn the heat off prior to going to bed. And you guessed it, if the weather is brutally cold outside, the room over the garage that lacks proper insulation becomes an icebox. We had to come up with a solution for this issue so that all our houseguests could sleep comfortably. After a short discussion, we decided to purchase a space heater for the room over the garage. This proved to have solved the problem because that night I was able to turn the HVAC unit off and we kept the space heater on in the room over the garage. The room was nice and comfortable, toasty but not too hot. It is amazing that a $25 space heater could create such comfort, and my dad noticed that using the space heater for guests staying in that room over the garage has saved him some money on his heating bill over the years.

There are pros and cons in everything we do in life.

As we become adults many of us invest in certain items like cars and homes so that we could live a comfortable life.

The pro of investing in a new car is that there is very little maintenance that is needed such as an oil change or perhaps checking the fluids, but as the car is driven and it gets older with more miles and wear and tear, the more maintenance it will require. This is similar to when someone owns a home, there are certain pros and perhaps cons that come with it. If your home is new, more than likely it has a new HVAC unit, then all you need to do is to complete simple maintenance, like changing the air filter and keeping the temperature consistent, and your unit will function efficiently. However, over the years, as the HVAC unit gets older, it will begin to lose its functionality and perhaps there could be a few unforeseen mishaps that you are never quite prepared for. And similar to a car, once a heating and air conditioning unit gets to a certain point, it will require extra maintenance to keep the unit running efficiently. My house has an older HVAC unit, so it requires additional maintenance each year. Therefore, I schedule appointments with my HVAC technician to come in and service the equipment at least 3 times per year. The industry recommends to service HVAC units twice per year, once prior to the start of Summer and the other in the Fall, but I prefer that extra service which I schedule at the beginning of the year just to prevent any unforeseen issues with the air conditioning system. Better be safe than sorry is my motto when it comes to my air conditioning and heating system.

Last Summer, my dad mentioned that he wanted to buy a portable A/C because during the Summers, he would like to run one of his air conditioning units in an effort to conserve energy and save some money on his energy bill.

The A/C unit that cools the upstairs bedrooms and some of the common spaces will need to be on during the days, but he would like to keep the other HVAC unit off and purchase a portable A/C for his bedroom located on the bottom floor. I advised him not to make the purchase because I wanted to do some research on portable A/C units. The portable A/C he wanted was from a random television commercial that convinced him that the unit would be great for his cooling needs. I saw the same commercial and thought the product was amazing as well. Those advertisers really do a great job at convincing consumers to buy their products. However, after further research and reading some very spirited reviews, I advised my dad that he should skip the portable air conditioners all together. Many described them as nothing more than a glorified fan and advised not to waste our money on them. I suggested to my dad to buy a window air conditioner instead because they are more reliable, and we have used them in the past with very little issues. In addition, the design and technology have improved since the last time we used them, and I found some with raving reviews. After that conversation, my dad hasn’t mentioned wanting a portable A/C or any additional A/C’s at all. Perhaps he changed his mind and I have not brought up the topic since the last discussion we had. Sometimes we should take the time to do some research on products that we see being advertised, and I am glad I saved my dad from wasting his money on a portable A/C unit with poor functionality.
