I spent a year at the local community college taking HVAC classes. I passed every test that I had to take, and I graduated in the top 5% of the class. The next step I had to take was to take my HVAC certification test. My hands were shaking so badly that I was sure I wasn’t going to be able to finish the test. Right before I went into the classroom, my instructor came out. He patted me on the back and told me to just take a deep breath. I took a deep breath, but the only thing that helped was I wasn’t holding my breath anymore. He laughed, and told me that if I did as well on the HVAC certification test as I had done in the HVAC classroom, he had a job for me. I think this was meant to make me more comfortable, but all it did was put my nerves even more on edge. There was now a lot riding on this test, other than just passing it. If I were to be top dog on the HVAC certification test, I knew I was going to have the job that I’ve been dreaming of. I sat down at my desk, closed my eyes, and took two deep breaths. When I opened my eyes, everything on the test sheet looked so easy. I thought I knew the answer to every question that I read over, but I knew it couldn’t be this easy. I was just finishing up the last question, when they called time. After two weeks of waiting, I finally got my test results. I think my new boss had to have heard me from 15 miles away, because I shouted so loud when I saw that I aced the test.
