Old thermostats could be costing extra money each year

I saw a commercial for one of those fancy Wi-Fi programmable thermostats, and the commercial made claims that the thermostats could save the homeowner up to 10% on their energy bills.

Additionally, the ad said that old thermostats could be costing the homeowner more money each year.

That took me by surprise because I have a regular digital thermostat and I had never heard any mention of it possibly costing more money. So, of course, I decided to Google this claim because I wanted to find out for myself. And sure enough, many of the HVAC providers recommend upgrading to a newer thermostat especially if it is a manual or battery-operated unit. And if the thermostat is over 10 years old, it is recommended that you invest in a new model. My thermostat is over 10 years old, in fact, it is closer to 15 years old, which is the same for my HVAC unit. I know that I will need to replace the HVAC unit soon, and at that time, I planned on investing in a new thermostat. However, now that I know that my older thermostat could be costing me more on my utility bill, I might invest in a new one. The Wi-Fi capable thermostat would give me better control of my HVAC unit which will then create more comfort inside my home. I am not the one to purchase the next best gadget that is being offered, but when I see value in the product, I don’t mind making the investment. And if it will save the 10% as advertised, then in no time, the thermostat will pay for itself. I can’t ask for too much more than that.
