I know this probably doesn’t affect other people, but it does affect me.

I really dislike going without maintenance on my equipment.

Especially when it comes to heating and cooling. Since the heating and A/C unit can be really expensive if it is ever broken, I like to be extra careful with it. But not only that, I also like to be careful with it because I enjoy the heating and air conditioning it provides, and I don’t want to lose that. However, as much as I may like to get heating and cooling tune ups, I may not always have the money available to me to get them. This is one of those moments. I was really low on money, to the point where I could barely afford groceries. I knew it had been at least a year since I had gotten heating and air conditioning maintenance, and that it was long overdue, but I simply couldn’t afford it. This unnerved me, because I couldn’t help but to think of the absolute worst case scenario, of the A/C device breaking down and then I would be stuck without cooling. I know there are worse things in the world to worry about than your HVAC system, but it is one of the things I worry about a lot, when I am low on money. Hopefully when I get a little extra money, I can finally get the heating and A/C maintenance that my system desperately needs, then I can relax again.

I had just got back from being out of state for a week, and as soon as I walked through the door, I knew something was very wrong.

My home, which I usually keep at a precise 74 degrees, was unusually heated.

It felt like a furnace in there! I rushed over to my thermostat to see what it read. It read 84 degrees! Wasting no time, I hastily tried to turn on the A/C unit, to no avail. This worried me even further and I decided that it would be best to call a heating and cooling dealer to fix the problem as soon as possible. Thankfully, I had the number of the local heating and A/C place thanks to a business card that a HVAC specialist gave me sometime back. I called the number and was greeted by a HVAC representative. They were able to fit me in for today, and later in the day, I welcomed the HVAC tech into my home. The cooling technician went straight over to my air conditioner and began to look at it. He was able to get it to turn on in less than 5 minutes. Thankfully, it wasn’t broken, it had somehow turned itself off. What a relief! I was glad that I wouldn’t have to worry about paying an expensive HVAC repair bill any time soon! The cooling specialist left soon after, and then I was able to enjoy the cooling air from the A/C device all to myself for the rest of the day.

I decided to give it a try and I closed my windows for a while.

I need to remember to keep my windows closed from now on. Or at least in the summer and spring. The reason is because it is so hot. You would think that being inside a climate controlled home, you would not be affected by the sun. However, never underestimate the power of the sun, because I was wrong. I used to keep my windows open a lot to let the sunshine in, but I didn’t realize the sun was also heating up my home. Because of this, while I had the cooling device running, my home often still felt warm. I already had a heating and A/C specialist come out and look at the A/C unit, and there was nothing wrong with it. With the cooling system working just fine, I was at a loss about what to do. I knew it wasn’t a thermostat problem either, so I had to do a little bit of research online, and that is when I came across the window issue. I decided to give it a try and I closed my windows for a while. It took a few hours, but eventually the entire home cooled down, and it was definitely noticeable. It is a little disappointing to have to keep my windows closed, because I do enjoy the sunshine, but not if it is going to heat up my home. I can’t have an air conditioner competing with the sun to keep the home cool, that just puts extra wear and tear on it. I decided to just have my windows open during the fall and winter, or on cloudy days in the summer.

My home has been having difficulty staying warm, and this concerned me.

Last winter, even though I had the heater on a lot, I still noticed my home was not that warm! I couldn’t have the furnace system running all of the time, because not only is that hard on the machine, but that will make my monthly bills spike! So for most of last winter, I just had to deal with the frosty temperatures.

However, now that winter is back around the corner, I don’t plan on going another cold winter again. I plan on keeping my home warm this year. I knew that it likely wasn’t the heater itself, because the heating device was still fairly new. So, I looked for other reasons why the home could not stay warm like it should be. One was the thermostat, but I figured the thermostat likely wasn’t the cause either. So then I thought about sealing all of the cracks in my home. After I had successfully sealed all of the cracks in my home, I was disappointed to see that it didn’t make much of a difference. I was running out of ideas, so I relied on a professional HVAC tech to tell me what I should do. Luckily, the heating and A/C professional was able to tell me what the problem was, and it was that the ductwork had holes in it. Luckily, this is an easy fix, and he was able to repair it in no time. And that was the issue, almost immediately, my home became really warm, almost too warm, and I was glad to have a heated home again.

I definitely plan on having my ductwork cleaned sometime in the near future.

That is because my air vents are always dirty, and I know the ductwork is where it is all coming from.

It makes sense as well, because the air conditioning system in my home pulls in a lot of dirt and hair, and all of that probably gets stuck in the ductwork system. If it wasn’t for the fact that getting ductwork cleaning can be expensive, I would have already gotten it by now. I have been comparing prices between all of the local heating and A/C places, so I will know in the future which one to go with, but right now, it is not something I can afford. Until then, I have been making sure to weekly clean the outside A/C vents. Although I can’t clean all of it, if I can just clean the dirt and hair on the outside of the HVAC vents, that will make the home feel and look a little better. I make sure to clean the vents weekly, because I notice that is about the time when it starts to look dirty again. Another thing I would eventually like to do with my HVAC system, is potentially upgrade for a better model. Don’t get me wrong, my current air conditioning model is fine, but it is simply not as efficient compared to the more modern models. That is something that would have to wait though, because ductwork cleaning is the first on my list of things to do.

I cannot express enough how important it is to keep your air clean and safe from harmful bacteria and allergens.

• A lot of times, people will sneeze and cough, and they think it’s allergies, when really, you could just have really bad indoor air quality.

This is where you can use climate control to your advantage. Your heating and cooling machine should have fantastic air filters. Without fantastic HVAC filters, it will not only be more likely to perform poorly, but it can shorten the lifespan and decrease the quality of your air. I recommend HEPA air filters, they are the best in my opinion. Next is making sure your ductwork is clean. The ductwork is pretty easy to forget since you can’t see it. But there is a lot of dirt, dust and hair up there that gathers and then circulates when your A/C unit kicks on. You can see how contaminated air would be unhealthy to breathe in. To get ductwork cleaning, all you have to do is get a heating and cooling worker to come out and perform the ductwork cleaning for you. Usually it will be a team of HVAC workers performing the ductwork cleaning. Last, getting a whole home air purifier is a great idea as well. A whole home media air cleaner is a great solution to air quality issues. These wonderful air purifiers will remove any allergens or pollutants in the air, and keep it nice and fresh for you. I highly recommend doing all of the above steps, clean air equals better health!

I wasn’t surprised to see more dark, gloomy looking clouds outside again.

This entire week has been nothing but rainy weather.

I don’t really mind rainy weather, in fact, I sometimes look forward to it for a couple of reasons. One, it waters all of the native plants in my garden. And two, it is very relaxing to listen and watch. Honestly another good reason is that it cools everything down. A lot of rainy weather occurs during the summer when it is hot, and the rain helps to saturate the area and make everything feel nice and cool again. Usually on these hot days, I have to continuously run my air conditioning system almost all day, and I am sure that is not good for the cooling machine. But when we have day after day of rainy weather, I don’t even have to keep my A/C machine on anymore, and it ends up saving me a lot of money, which I definitely appreciate. So I am looking forward to another week of rainy weather, and that means another week-long break for the HVAC machine as well. The only thing that is bad about rainy weather is driving in it. Driving in rain is never fun, especially since there are a lot more accidents to worry about. Thankfully by the time I go out to do errands, it is only sprinkling. I refuse to drive in heavy rain, because I have been almost in accidents because of having a hard time seeing the road. But all in all, I welcome the rain.

I was in the mood to get fast food, and I didn’t have to look at what places I should go to, because I already knew.

• I am a creature of habit, and once I find a place that I like, I will keep returning to it.

I found a nice fast food place that is not only cheap, but serves great food as well. I planned on getting some of their barbecue ribs with some sides, and potentially dessert too. I could already feel my stomach rumble in anticipation and I eagerly hopped in my car and drove to their location. However, blocking most of their small parking lot was a HVAC van. At first I was irritated that this heating tech had the nerve to block most of the parking lot. This cooling tech should just get in line like everyone else and wait their turn. However, I then realized he wasn’t waiting for food and the heating and A/C technician was there for repairs. I looked inside and noticed that the food place was closed. Inside, I could see the heating and cooling technician working away at what I assume was their commercial heating and A/C system. The sign on the door read that they were closed for the day for HVAC maintenance. How disappointing, of all of the days for them to be closed, it just had to be the day where I was craving them the most. I ended up sitting at a nearby taco place instead, and figured I would return tomorrow.

I guess it’s like that saying unspoken fears come true, or something along those lines. Anyways, the home I bought had pretty bad previous owners, and the home had to be repaired in a lot of ways, since it had been neglected for so long. The HVAC machine was by far the worst, the original heating and cooling technician told me I should just plain get a new one, but since I didn’t want to do that, I had to find another HVAC professional who was willingly to repair it for me. Thankfully that heating and A/C tech did a fantastic job, and the HVAC device was working almost like new. However, the cooling technician did warn me that while it worked now, it might now last for that long, and that I should be preparing for a new HVAC installation. I understood this, but I hoped that the old unit could last as long as possible. A year passed, and I was feeling pretty confident in the cooling machine. It lasted through the brutal winter and blazing summer, and fall and winter as well. It was great! I even remarked to my wife how well it was doing and how long it has lasted. As soon as the words left my lips I regretted saying it, because then I worried the A/C machine would break down. My wife reassured me that that would not happen. The very next day though, the A/C unit did just that, and it broke down. I knew I should have kept my mouth shut.

I have never liked it when some stores in particular keep their temperatures at freezing.

I don’t know what it is with the grocery store near me, but they do exactly that.

It feels like they have 10 different A/C systems that are always running at 60 degrees. Maybe that is a bit of an over exaggeration, but I think you get what I mean. I really don’t like it when stores and other places keep their temperatures really cold. Who wants to go into a store and feel like they’re in the middle of winter? Since it is the only grocery store close to me, I have to go there, but every time I do, I wear a jacket, that’s how bad it is. I have now started sending my husband instead, since he does not mind the cold temperatures in the least bit, he seems to almost thrive in them. This is why I am so thankful to have my own thermostat that I can control from home. Here at my house, the temperature is never below 75 degrees, and that is exactly how it should be. The only time it might start getting a little chilly is when it is winter time, but that is to be expected. Next year I am planning to upgrade my furnace system, and when I am able to successfully upgrade the heating unit, then my house should be even warmer, and I think that is the best part of a home. A nice toasty warm home.
