I had a real shocker when I came into work this afternoon! It's late September, as well as a cold snap brought hot as well as cold temperatures in the high 30s this afternoon. I was very grateful for the oil furnace in our automobile as I was driving to work on our commute. The perfect environment for writing
There's a spring in my step every Friday morning. Work isn't necessarily less grueling, but the mere fact that the weekend is so nigh at hand really improves my mood, and even gives me a boost of energy. I even sleep better on Thursday nights, as if my body knows that it's almost over! So when I tell you that I was devastated when I came home Friday evening to a house that had somehow lost air conditioning, I mean it! I mean, sure, the work week was over, but what was I going to do about my broken air conditioner? I didn't see it coming, and I did not have the slightest clue as to how it happened. It was almost 6:00 in the evening, so I thought perhaps I could still get an HVAC guy on the phone. I called a local heating and air conditioning company, and they said they would send someone out the following morning. I balked at this notion. I suddenly realized the predicament I was in. It's not like I would sleep particularly well that night without the benefit of an air conditioner. However, I usually sleep in on Saturday mornings. I look forward to being able to sleep in on Saturday mornings every week, as a matter of fact. The HVAC guy said he would be able to arrive at 8:00 in the morning! I'm not typically up until 9:30 in the morning. Luckily, I said I wouldn't necessarily be available that early, and the HVAC man was able to reschedule the appointment to 11:00 in the morning. That was significantly more convenient.

I never really thought about just how many fans I have throughout my entire house. I guess I really do love fans! I have a ceiling fan in every room of my house, except for the garage and the basement, and I'm seriously considering converting the basement into a miniature apartment, so it might end up getting a ceiling fan after all! Were this not enough, I have all sorts of portable fans. I have a couple desk fans. I have fans on stands that oscillate back and forth. I also have box fans. I just love making sure the air in every room is circulating. They say that you can end up setting a higher temperature on the thermostat if your air is being well circulated, and you will end up feeling a few degrees cooler, as if that lower temperature really was set on the thermostat! I like keeping the thermostat at 75°, but perhaps it actually feels like 72° or something, because of all the fans. I end up saving on my energy bills I suppose, although, having all those fans plugged in probably saps a good deal of electricity. But that's the thing: they're not all on at once. The reason I suddenly realized that I really seem to enjoy fans, is that my girlfriend came over and commented that they were everywhere. I must have taken it for granted until somebody pointed it out. She gets cold really easily, so I'm worried that she won't like the fact that I have three different kinds of fans running in my room at night when I'm sleeping.
You would think that with me being a sun worshiper and loving the beach and warm weather that I would be very happy living in this area of the country. It is true that I love the weather outside. You can call it pathetic, but anything below 70° gives me such a chill that I need to be wearing at least one extra layer. It is true that I enjoy the weather around here, but the problem starts whenever I walk into virtually any building that is not my own home. In my home, I have control of the thermostat, of course, and that means that I am comfortable. Call me crazy, but I set the thermostat to 77° and I am perfectly content. It does save me a lot of money on my energy bills, but that's not the primary reason I do it. I do it because I'm more comfortable at that warmer temperature. Other people overuse the air conditioner around here, plain and simple. Whether it's a restaurant or a grocery store or a doctor's office or just plain anywhere, it's always too cold for me inside buildings! Seriously, if you prefer it this cold, then move up north! I have friends who would cling to their air conditioners with desperation, trading any other creature comfort, as long as they would be allowed to keep their air conditioner. Like, seriously, go up north. It's your promised land, it would seem. But no, they say they actually like the weather down here better. I will never understand it!
It seems to rain all the time where I live. Ample rainfall is just a fact of life around here, it would seem. I would say that the wettest season is the summer, and yet, as we're getting into the fall season, it's still pretty wet outside! Believe it or not, I'd prefer If it was at least cool outside during these rainstorms. A wet cold can bring on the flu or pneumonia, but I personally would prefer relief from the heat. Instead, even in the fall, and sometimes, even in the winter, it's warm and humid and wet. I remember living in my parent's house, which had thick walls and excellent insulation. It also had a fantastic heating and air conditioning system. The wet mugginess was left outside, where it belonged. Now I live in a house with thin walls and insulation that isn't as great. As a result, that muggy feeling ends up getting into my house. He gives you that icky, sticky feeling! I may very well need to invest in a dehumidifier, because my air conditioner system just doesn't seem to be doing an adequate job of pulling out the moisture in the air, which it is supposed to do in addition to cooling things down. I think I will go to the store and purchase a dehumidifier soon. Or maybe I will look online and see if there is a good deal, so that I willl have more variety to choose from, and I can have it shipped to me instead. One way or another, I need relief from all of the wet, humid weather.
If Southerners enjoy the warm weather, why do they love their air conditioners so much?
