I make quite a lot of extra money babysitting on weekends.

People seem to be desperate to ditch their kids for a precious few hours, and I’m more than happy to capitalize on that fact.

As long as they’re not mine, I don’t mind having to deal with them for a few hours. It can potentially be quite easy, depending on how tired they are, and whether they ate a big meal that day before I show up. Still, parents are willing to pay quite a lot of money for what can be comparatively little work. Don’t get me wrong, I still have tiny terrors to deal with every now and then, but it’s ultimately worth it in the end. One thing I can’t stand is when the homeowners tell me I can’t touch the thermostat. I at least want to be comfortable while I’m watching their kids, and I don’t see the problem with letting me set the temperature for just a couple hours. It’s not like I drop the temperature super low in the summer or crank it up really high in the winter. It’s just that some of my customers may as well not even be using an HVAC system If they insist on barely using their air conditioner or heating! So I have to admit, if I don’t feel comfortable, I’ll sneak over to the thermostat, figure out how to work it, and set my preferred temperature while keeping a close eye on when the car comes into the driveway, so I can switch it back quickly. Some of the parents are nice enough to text me when they’re on their way, which makes it even easier to switch back the temperature!

Babysitters can be a lifesaver! I used to babysit a lot, so I truly appreciate people who are willing to put up with someone else’s kids for a long time.

I think they deserve plenty of compensation, that’s for sure! However, when I was a babysitter, I always abided by the rules of the household in which I was babysitting.

If the couple whose kid or kids I was watching specified that they did not want their thermostat touched, I did not touch the thermostat. That’s why I’m a little irked that now that I have my own two kids and I need a babysitter to rely on every now and then for date night with my hubby or other such engagements, I have a babysitter who doesn’t seem to have the same decorum that I used to have. Both my husband and I insisted to the babysitter that the thermostat should remain at 75° at all times. I think that’s a pretty reasonable temperature, even when it’s rather warm outside. The babysitter seemed to disregard our wishes, though. It turns out she was setting the thermostat all the way down to 69°! We started to suspect that she was messing with the thermostat when we came home one evening to find that it was a lot chillier in our house than it should have been. I went to check the thermostat, and it read lower than It should have, despite the fact that the set temperature still said 75°. That was curious, because it was hot and humid that night, and there was no real reason for the ambient temperature to be lower than 75°. We are definitely going to confront the babysitter about this!

Our kids arrive home from school and end up being alone at the house for two and a half hours before either me or my wife gets home.

The vast majority of the time, we find the house to be in order with nothing broken and all three of our children behaving relatively well.

Although, I have to admit that there’s possibly a lot going on that we simply are not privy to. One thing my wife and I have suspected is that the kids are changing the temperature on the thermostat the moment they get home from school, and then changing it back as soon as they see us pull up into the driveway. If it’s summertime, anytime they’re home alone, it seems that they crank up the air conditioner farther than we want it to go. We do try to save on our energy bill costs, after all. In the winter, I have even more reason to suspect that they crank up the heat when it’s really cold outside, because I always notice that it’s a little warmer when I walk through the door, and then things get a little cooler. I’ve never actually seen a different temperature on the thermostat when I go over to inspect it, but I think I know what’s going on. Our energy bills are even a little more costly than I would have anticipated. Those hours of being away from home, during which our kids may or may not be messing with the thermostat add up, after all!

My wife is a clean freak.

However, it’s only mildly obnoxious, and the truth is, that I am grateful that she is so conscientious about keeping things clean. Our home is spotless at any given time. I’ve offered to help her clean many times, but she is fussy about how it’s done, so I just let her do her thing. I know the air quality in our home has benefited from her insistence on keeping everything clean. The only thing is, that dust is kicked up whenever she gets cleaning. She decided to do research on what may help purify the air in our rooms even further than merely cleaning everything. We were initially under the impression that the air filter and the HVAC system filters the air of a home, but that’s not true. An HVAC air filter filters out the air within the HVAC system itself. We discovered there was such a thing as home air purifiers. These are filters that are designed to actually filter the air within a home. My wife picked the most efficient air purifier that trapped the most contaminants possible. The air purifier was installed, and I can swear that almost immediately, there was a difference in the air quality of our home. Everything seemed fresher and cleaner. My wife was happy with the results as well. She insists that we don’t open the windows or leave the doors open for very long. We’ve gotten spoiled with just how clean our air is! I would recommend air purifiers to anyone.

I am a freelance writer, and call me spoiled, but I have found that I simply cannot work as effectively and efficiently and with the same level of creativity if my environment is not completely comfortable.

I need the temperature to be exactly 72 degrees and the humidity to be just right.

I also need to be able to block out the noise around me with noise canceling earphones. Music is too distracting for me to be able to focus on writing, so I prefer finding a video with ambient background noise. I choose different sounds depending on my mood. I’d like to get out of the house and work in other areas, but they never seem to have the temperature or the ambience just right for me to be able to focus. Coffee shops are typically too noisy and crowded. They’re also either too cold or too warm. The one place that I found to be a good alternative to home when it comes to writing is the library. The temperature and humidity level is almost as good as at home, and it is sufficiently quiet but not too quiet, because I don’t like complete silence. I don’t think I could ever get used to working in an office where I have no control of how the environment feels. I would be far less productive, that’s for sure! I certainly don’t take it for granted that I’m able to work anywhere I want. As long as I’m in control of the thermostat or I have the ability to choose where to write, I will have peak creativity and productivity!

I had a real shocker when I came into work this morning. It’s late October, and a cold snap brought temperatures in the high 30s this morning. I was very grateful for the heater in my car as I was driving to work on my commute. It felt so good that I did not want to leave my vehicle once I reached the parking garage. As I got out of my car, I took solace in the fact that at least it would be a short walk to my office where I was sure that the heater was running. I walked through the front lobby doors at my office building, and I was met with a chill instead of a welcome wave of warmth. I figured they weren’t running the heater in the lobby for some reason. Maybe the door was being opened too often. I didn’t think about it much, because I was sure that at least in my office, it would be warm. All through the walk to my office, and even in the elevator ride, I noticed that there was a chill in the air. When I stepped out onto my floor, I could hardly believe it. It was actually colder on my floor than it had been throughout the rest of the building. What on earth were the people in charge of the HVAC system thinking? Virtually everyone else was just as surprised and angry as I was. How could we be expected to work in these conditions? Then we found out that someone actually left the air conditioner on! The air conditioner was running as if it was hot outside! Granted, it had been the previous afternoon, but someone has to keep up with the shifting weather in our fall season!
