We’ve lived in the same community for such a long time. My partner and I were born here, went to school here and bought a home in the area. We once left for the city but found it too complex, so we started our family. We’ve had the same stores, shops, clinics and many other enterprises. We know all the owners and have an excellent relationship. So, it came as such a shock when the owner of the local AC enterprise closed the shop. He wanted to relocate to be near his daughter, who had a young family. Since there was no one to take over the AC enterprise, he decided to shut it down. We were all concerned about how much it would cost to hire an AC worker from the next town. But, we soon had a new AC business opening up in the area. The owner was new to the area and began sending us vouchers with offers to introduce his business. We needed our AC unit serviced before summer, and he seemed to have reasonable prices. We opted to give him a call, and he ended up being the loveliest person. He worked in an AC company in the city but wanted to move somewhere quaint with his small family. While visiting the area, he heard we needed an AC business and jumped at the opportunity. The AC expert had already interacted with other people in the community and felt quite welcome. There were many homes to service before summer, so he planned to hire two more experts to help him out.

Uncle Donald is what we refer to as a lovely but grumpy man.

He always has the best gifts for everyone, but he also complains and curses a lot.

Still, we wouldn’t have him live anywhere else than next door to us. Growing up, our late aunt and uncle Donald were our babysitters. Mom and dad were working a lot, so they offered to look after us. That’s how we became so close with uncle Donald. After high school, I went away to college and uncle Donald bought me a car to come home often. I kept my promise to do so, and that’s how I found myself choosing a new thermostat for him last year. He called me to ask if I was coming home for the holiday weekend. When I went to see him, he complained about the thermostat in his house. For some reason, the unit kept changing the temperature in the house even after he set it. The thermostat was so old, so I told uncle Donald it was time to change it. He agreed, but we couldn’t trace the old model he had. So, I convinced him to get a smart thermostat that he could program with his phone. He reluctantly agreed, and we had an AC expert come and set it up. He downloaded an app for my uncle to use and left us a manual to read. Uncle Donald was quite frustrated with the smart thermostat at first because it had so many other features. But, I kept working with him despite his complaints until he mastered how to use the app. I had learned a long time ago to tune out the complaints and keep on until he got it.

Walter moved to the city with the hopes of living a good life.

It was such a blow to him and his sister. But, they were glad their parents weren’t around to go through that awful experience. Walter started life as a bartender while he and his sister went to school part-time. His goal was to finish school and set up a business. He still longed to work for himself, which he eventually did after landing on a great idea. Years later, Walter managed to purchase a three-bedroom house outside the city for him and his sister. Jess could work remotely, so she saw no need to live in the city. Part of the upgrades would include installing a heating system. Winter was intense in the area, and having proper heating was essential. All this was great advice from her friend, who was so stoked Jess wanted to join her. She referred Jess to the best HVAC company in the area. They specialized in installing, servicing and repairing air conditioning units in cabins. Jess knew she needed excellent heating in her home since she’d be spending so much time indoors working. The whole upgrade and new heating system installation were going to cost a small fortune. But, Jess was more than willing to pay to get a slice of this piece of heaven. The place wasn’t so isolated, plus there was a town some miles away with stores and everything else she’d need. Installing the heating system in the cabin took some time since the HVAC company professional also had to work on the duct system in the cabin. An inspection had revealed the need for further insulation.

The AC business owner was having a sale on the ductless mini-splits

Expanding the house had always been part of our plans ever since we bought it. That was three years ago, and we even had plans drawn up for the expansion. However, it was taking longer than we thought. The pandemic hit our family hard as my hubby lost his job. We had to cut back on expenses and shelve the expansion plans. Still, the kids needed a play area since the house wasn’t big enough to contain their energy. Lucky for us, we have a big backyard, so we opted to purchase a ready-made shed to become their playroom. The space was adequate, but it required an air conditioning unit. We consulted the owner of the local AC business in our area about air conditioning for the shed. We had thought about extending the ductwork to the shed. This would make it easier for the shed to use the central AC in our home. But, the AC business owner gave us a much simpler and cheaper solution. She sold mini-split ACs that would suit such a small space. These units didn’t require any ductwork extension and worked well during all seasons. We were so happy to hear about mini-split ACs. The AC business owner was having a sale on the ductless mini-splits. That was our lucky day, and we were glad we went in to consult. We got one and managed to install it without incurring extra installation costs. The kids were so happy since they had a comfortable place to play no matter what time of the year it was.

June was horrible with time, so she always found herself late for meetings and forgetting important dates. One would think she was delaying things on purpose. But, it was just a weakness her family had come to understand. A year ago, she managed to purchase her first home. The house wasn’t in the best state, but it was in a fantastic location. Her vision was to upgrade it and make sure it had better value. The first thing June had to do was upgrade the appliances in the house. Part of that means installing a new HVAC system. When June bought the house, it had an old HVAC unit that hardly worked. She used this to negotiate a better price and later embarked on changing the system. Once that was done, the next step was to install a whole-house air purification system. June delayed this too until one day she noticed the air quality in her home wasn’t great. That prompted her to call the HVAC experts to come and set up a whole-house air purification system. The system was one of the best in the industry and would help June feel much more comfortable in her home. As she got the system set up, her dad also took that chance to add a humidifier that would tackle dry air in winter.

After high school, my son told me he wasn’t sure what to do with his life.

College would cost a small fortune, and he wasn’t keen to carry such massive debt studying a course he didn’t like. So, we let him be for some time as he worked as a store clerk in town. We had faith he’d figure out what to do soon. One afternoon, he was home from work when the HVAC technician arrived. We had booked him two days before to inspect the heating and cooling unit in the house. Summer was almost here, and we wanted to know the unit was in the best condition. My son allowed him to access the central cooling and heating system for a proper inspection. As the HVAC technician did his job, they began to talk about his career. The HVAC technician informed him his dad had been an HVAC technician. He always went with him to job sites when not in school, and that’s how he developed a passion for the HVAC industry. The HVAC technician told my son the job paid well, had excellent working hours and best of all, he wasn’t in debt. He went to HVAC school part-time and worked, which helped him cover all the costs of school. That was such a light bulb moment for my son as he finally figured out what he wanted to do. He didn’t have to go to college and get into debt to live a good life. He’d study installing and repairing HVACs. That was such good news for us, and we were ready to support him every step of the way.

When I graduated from college, I believed I was prepared and well-equipped with all the knowledge and tools that I needed to go out into the world and survive as an adult. I was so naive to how little I knew about what it meant to be an adult living in a home by myself. School prepared me for a career in corporate America, but it certainly did not prepare me for everyday issues, so I had to learn certain things as life unfolded. Talk about on the job training. One area in which I lacked the necessary training was how to properly operate and maintain an HVAC unit. Prior to graduating from college, those maintenance responsibilities always belonged to someone else. My dad made sure that we had air conditioning when I lived at home, and when I lived in a dorm or college apartment, the janitorial crew took care of all the maintenance of those HVAC systems. Therefore, when I lived on my own, I was completely oblivious to the need to have an HVAC maintenance plan. I was unaware that the A/C filter should be changed every 3 to 6 months, I didn’t know that air ducts needed to be properly cleaned, and finally, I was unaware that the HVAC unit needed to be serviced twice per year. Up until that point in my life, I had never interacted with an HVAC serviceman, and my first interaction came only after my A/C stopped working. I learned a lot about the maintenance of the HVAC system from that technician. He provided so many tips about how to conserve energy as well as a detailed checklist on the maintenance that I should perform to guarantee that my unit ran efficiently. To this day, I still use those tips and the checklist as part of my HVAC maintenance plan, therefore, I’m so grateful for that HVAC service technician.

I think it is a bit much, but that is my opinion

In the summertime, my cousin Lisa keeps the temperature in her bedroom as cold as possible. I personally like to sleep in a room that is cold so that I can cuddle up under my blanket all year long, but if a room gets too cold, it could become a bit uncomfortable. My thermostat is set to about 74 degrees at nights in the Summers and then, I use a ceiling fan for additional cooling. This is the perfect temperature for a very comfortable night of sleep. However, that is too warm for my cousin Lisa because the temperature in her bedroom feels more like an icebox. She keeps a few pieces of equipment running at night to ensure that her bedroom remains at a certain temperature. Lisa sets the thermostat to her HVAC system at 68 degrees, then she has a digital remote controlled window air conditioner that she keeps at 66 degrees, and finally, she turns on her ceiling fan as well as her standing fan. If she could transform her room into a freezer, I think she would make the sacrifice and do it. Of course, her energy bill is a bit excessive as a result of the way she uses her cooling system, but she doesn’t care, she would rather spend the extra money to sleep in what she deems as a comfortable room. I think it is a bit much, but that is my opinion. What do you think, is an HVAC system, a window air conditioner, and two fans necessary for a comfortable night of sleep in the Summer? However, my mother loved it and even kept her space heater running in the guest room

My mother uses a space heater in her room during the Winter months. During the days, when the HVAC system is not running, the space heater supplements the heat in her bedroom. So, my mom is used to her room being nice and toasty which is way too warm for me, but that is her preference. Recently, we had Thanksgiving dinner at my cousin’s house, and my cousin does not use the heat in the Fall or during the Winter months. In fact, her HVAC system goes on hiatus between the months of October and April because typically she uses it only for her air conditioning needs. This Thanksgiving, the weather was a bit colder than what we have seen in the last few years, and when I arrived, I noticed that my cousin’s house was extremely cold during the days and even colder at nights, so I advised my mom to pack her space heater because I knew my cousin would probably hesitate in turning on the heater. Fortunately, after a few subtle mentions by my mom of how cold the house was, my cousin finally gave in and turned on the heat. I personally don’t like using the heat in the Winter months, so I was ok cuddling up with a blanket like I do at home. While the heat was on the house became a bit too warm for me and for my cousin. However, my mother loved it and even kept her space heater running in the guest room. One evening, I walked into the guest room where my parents slept and the heat that escaped the room was overwhelming, but my mom and dad were comfortable and felt right at home. It’s fascinating to me how we all have different preferences of how we like the temperatures in our homes especially during the Winter months.
