Hurricane causes debris in outside HVAC unit – no power

About two weeks ago a really terrible storm hit my town harder than we could’ve ever expected.

The area I live in does experience quite a few hurricanes and sometimes we hit harder than we are expected to.

This was one of those times when we just weren’t as prepared as we should’ve been for the hurricane that was coming our way. The weather channel also didn’t predict it to be quite as bad as it actually turned out to be. So we were quite shocked when we lost power during the middle of the storm. I knew right away that the heating cooling system was going to make it through this terrible storm. We have the kind of heating and cooling system that still has equipment outside the house. I know a lot of new fancy equipment is all located inside the house, but that is not the case for hours. I had a feeling that once the storm was over and we were able to look outside, we were going to be shocked because our HVAC system was not there. Well turns out after the storm was over we walked outside and our heating and cooling system was completely covered by tree branches. I knew right away that we were going to have to replace the entire heating and cooling system. So I made a mental note to call a local HVAC company the very next day so we could try to get this problem fixed as quickly as possible

Research on a new HVAC system

I am the kind of person that likes to research everything before I take the job.

I like to make sure I have thoroughly looked at all of my options and that I am in the best place possible to make an informed decision.

So when my husband told me that he wanted to replace our heating and cooling system I thought it would be a good idea for me to take a look at all the facts and figures available online. My husband thought I was crazy because he said he had already done research on the heating and cooling system in our home, but sometimes I don’t trust that means get the job done properly. You really do have to do things yourself sometimes. So I am excited to say that after some extensive research on heating and cooling systems, I think my husband actually made the right choice. I think he is correct that we do need a brand new heating and cooling system in our house and I think the one that he chose is great. I was kind of shocked that my husband didn’t use the most expensive heating and cooling system on the market, but I’m not complaining. There are other small projects around the house that I would like to complete as well and saving money on the heating and cooling system will really help us out in the end. I am not really excited to have the new heating and cooling system installed in our house and can’t wait for the renovation to start.

New heating system in my car

I had to agree with him when he told me this because I also didn’t think it was worth it to spend that much money on fixing my car when it was sold

I’ve been driving the same car for a week 12 years at this point. My parents got it for me right when I graduated from high school and it’s been a great car for me. I really enjoy this car and I never imagined that I would have to get a new one, but I think today might have come. Last week when I got in my car I noticed that the air conditioning wasn’t working anymore. So I took my car into a local HVAC mechanic store to see if he could help me fix the issue. The HVAC technician that was working on my car told me he didn’t think it would be worth it for me to replace the entire HVAC system in my car since the car was so old. After talking with the HVAC technician for a while he told me it would be a couple thousand dollars for me to replace the entire HVAC system in my car. I had to agree with him when he told me this because I also didn’t think it was worth it to spend that much money on fixing my car when it was sold. So I think I’m going to have to buy a brand new car. I’m not really in a spot financially where I can afford a new car, but I also don’t think it’s worth it to put money into a car that is so old but I’m going to have to buy a new one eventually. Hopefully in my new car I will be able to get a brand new heating and cooling system so I won’t have to worry about this in the future.

Installing a floor furnace

My husband works in the corporate department of a national heating and cooling company.

So he is always coming to me with these crazy ideas about having a brand new heating and cooling system installed in our house.

I told my husband if he doesn’t stop reading the local HVAC technology section of the newspaper that I was going to kick him out of the house because we have spent too much money on upgrading our heating and cooling system since we got married. My husband and I have been married for 10 years and in those 10 years I think we have spent almost $1 million on heating and cooling equipment. That might be an exaggeration but honestly it’s what it feels like. I told my husband that if he gets to spend all this money on heating and cooling equipment that I get to spend that much money shopping. So when he came to the house two nights ago and told me that he wanted to install the floor furnace in our home I told him he was crazy. We live in a southern part of the country that never gets cold weather at all during the year. So installing the floor furnace makes no sense for our home. I know we got excited about the floor furnace and I shot him down. I just have to keep them in check when he sees all these exciting HVAC technology articles at work. We don’t need to spend all our money on heating and cooling equipment.

My New Trick for Family Poker Night

Since my wife and I usually keep the house at a cool 74, the poker players essentially walked into a sauna every time we played

I’m abysmal at poker. Despite having played for some time, I just can’t master my poker face. Despite my acting failures, I still host a monthly poker night at my family’s home. After years of losing disastrously to my various relatives, inspiration struck one night when it was particularly warm in our bonus room. The HVAC system had been acting up, and the room where we played was warmer than usual. Even the people with the best poker faces couldn’t contain their discomfort at the warmth of the room. It distracted them; they were so busy worrying about the sweat stains under their arms that their faces betrayed their hands. I betted accordingly, and for the first time, I was the victor of poker night! Although an HVAC technician came out the next day, diagnosing and repairing our leaky air ducts, I decided that I would be turning up the heat in the bonus room on poker nights going forward. I told my relatives that I was keeping my thermostat at a higher temperature to maintain energy efficiency, and to reduce my cooling system’s impact on my electric bill. They all seemed to understand, but their respective games were absolutely impacted by the lack of cool air in the room. Before each game, I placed my hand over the vents in the bonus room to make sure they weren’t blowing any cool air, and I double-checked the thermostat to ensure that the bonus room zone was set to 78 degrees. Since my wife and I usually keep the house at a cool 74, the poker players essentially walked into a sauna every time we played. The discomfort of the climate impacted almost everyone’s play, and as a result, I won more often. I was also more confident, knowing that I held the reins to the comfort of the rest of the group.

Bowling is Sweaty Work!

People are routinely shocked at the things that I have to consider as a manager of a bowling alley.

Various leagues meet on a variety of days at specific times, and lanes have to be reserved for them.

I have to make sure that no one tries to steal any of our precious bowling balls (you’d be surprised by how often bowling ball heists are attempted). But, I also have to make sure that our HVAC system is functioning efficiently and effectively. A few weeks ago, our seniors bowling league was meeting for their weekly session. I noticed that I was a little sweatier than usual at the rentals desk. Just as I was going to check the thermostat, one of the bowlers from the senior league approached the rentals desk. “Is it hot in here, or is it just me?” I told him that I was on my way to the thermostat, and he said, “I just stuck my hand over one of the vents, and I didn’t feel anything…” I told him that I would take care of it. I walked back to my office and, sure enough, the thermostat read 78 degrees inside the bowling alley, despite our cooling system being set to its usual 68 degrees. I called our trusty HVAC contractor, who sent a technician out right away. The technician discovered—after crawling around in the attic inspecting the ducts and vents, tinkering with our air handler, and exploring our outside units—that there was an electrical problem that was keeping our thermostat from communicating with our cooling system. He briefly fiddled with the thermostat wiring, and within 20 minutes of his arrival, he had the HVAC system up and running! The seniors bowling league caught him on his way out, and offered their sincerest thanks!

Soaking up the Air Conditioning after a Fishing Tournament

I’m a recreational fisherman, and one of my favorite activities is participating in fishing tournaments. Fishing tournaments come in all shapes, sizes, and colors; usually the tournament fees benefit a non-profit organization, and the tournament will stipulate the species of fish that anglers should pursue. When I’m enrolled in a tournament, I’m usually staying at my river house. While most of the houses around it are lavish, this home has been in my family for generations, and it is humble and cozy. Since fishing tournaments usually take place in the summer, it’s integral that my homey river cottage is well-cooled and ventilated once my day on the water is complete. While the home was originally built with no air conditioning (I have lots of respect for my great-grandparents!), my grandparents installed window units in the 1980s. The window A/C units served our family well for some time; my parents even replaced a few of them with updated models when I was a teenager, which definitely improved the situation. But, once the house was completely under my purview, I decided that I was done enduring the hotspots that the window A/C units missed; I hired a local HVAC contractor to install a full HVAC system in the river house. It was a one-stop shop; the HVAC technician asked me about my needs, and I was completely in control of the cooling equipment that was installed in the house. They installed vents exactly where I wanted them (there was one directly above my spot on the couch!) and the return and air filter were placed in a very convenient location. While I more than respect my grandparents’ decision to take the plunge and install window A/C units in the 1980s, I decided that I needed to bring my home into the 21st Century, especially for my post-tournament comfort.

Duct Condensation is No Joke

Since our attic was so hot and humid, our HVAC technician recommended installing a standalone dehumidifier in our attic; he also encouraged us to check our air filters more regularly, since dirty air filters put more pressure on the cooling system, which also contributes to condensation

A few months ago, while hanging streamers for a party, I noticed a slightly dark spot in my ceiling. It was bizarre, and I had never noticed it before; the spot was like a grease stain, or a slightly dark spot of water. I assumed that my roof was leaking, but after calling out my roofing contractor, they determined that it had nothing to do with the roof. My wife suggested that it might be duct condensation, and she turned out to be correct! An HVAC technician came out, and confirmed her suspicions. It was a very hot summer, and our air conditioning system was working overtime to cool our home. The cooling system expert told us that ducts are like a glass of water: when it’s cold inside the ducts, and hot outside the ducts, condensation forms. We live in an older home, and the insulation in the attic isn’t exactly tip-top. The temperature of the air outside is essentially the same temperature as the air in the attic, so the blazing summer heat really does a number on our ducts. Since our attic was so hot and humid, our HVAC technician recommended installing a standalone dehumidifier in our attic; he also encouraged us to check our air filters more regularly, since dirty air filters put more pressure on the cooling system, which also contributes to condensation. While the technician was up in our attic exploring our ductwork, he discovered some leaky ducts; the more air that escapes, the more likely it is that condensation will form, so his visit alone was a huge first step in solving our problem! We were very lucky to have the advice of a trained HVAC professional to solve our duct condensation issue.

Creative ways to keeping your HVAC system at its optimum operation

The maintenance of your system is a must if you want to keep your system at its optimum operation.

Scheduling an HVAC tune-up at least twice every year, once before summer and another before winter seasons, with a professional HVAC professional.

Otherwise, you may experience multiple issues with your HVAC system that will compromise its operation, draining your money on frequent repairs and increased energy bills. There are maintenance practices that you can do quickly without the help of your HVAC contractor. In contrast, others may need the expertise of a professional to keep your system’s health intact, ensuring peak operations. Do not close your vents. Many new homeowners often close their vents in rooms that they don’t actively use to save energy. In reality, this interferes with the operations of your HVAC system, making it less efficient. Heat distributes itself evenly within a space. Even with a closed vent, your HVAC system will work harder to evenly distribute heat in all your rooms, even those with closed vents. Keep your doors and windows closed during springtime. It is normal to keep the windows and doors open during springtime to enjoy the beautiful environment. However, spring is an allergy season, and when you leave your windows and doors open, you are admitting allergens into your home. As a result, too much strain will be put on your HVAC system to clean your air, causing premature wear and tear on some components. This will ultimately affect the operation of your system.

How to spot the gas issue in your furnace

More than eighty million Americans use natural gas to heat their homes.

Gas furnaces need natural gas to provide heating.

When you have an older HVAC system or one that has not been correctly maintained, the possibility of a gas leak is very high. Seals wear out over time, exposing leaks. This most commonly occurs in furnace cracks or had valves. Your HVAC technician should check for cracks during the annual maintenance inspection. It is essential to learn how to spot gas issues in your furnace before it ends up hazardous. When you smell rotten eggs coming from your furnace, it could be a sign of a gas leak. Fortunately, gas companies include mercaptan in their gas so you can smell it. Typically, this substance makes the gas smell like rotten eggs or Sulphur. This is usually a telltale sign of a gas leak in your home. However, if the natural gas in its original state leaks, you would not be able to smell it. Check the color of your pilot flame. The pilot flame should always be burning blue. If the flames turn yellow or orange, it could be a sign that your furnace is producing toxic carbon monoxide gas. Hissing sounds coming from your furnace reveal the possibility of a gas leak. You should turn off your gas valve and furnace immediately and contact your HVAC technician after evacuating your home. You may also be experiencing carbon monoxide symptoms such as trouble breathing, dizziness, increased fatigue, nausea, nosebleeds, and ear, throat, and nose irritation. These symptoms are aggravated if the gas leak in your home is left unattended.
