I thought I wanted to be living on my own

There’s nothing more depressing than living with your mother.

  • I’m sorry if you’ve been in a similar boat as I have recently.

Of course, this frustration only gets more valid with age. If you are an adult living with your mother, I’m guessing you absolutely understand how discouraging it is! When I moved out to go to school I absolutely did not expect that I would be back in 10 years. Or EVER. All of the things that I despised about living with my mother as a child apparently have not changed. She is still unpredictable plus a real authoritarian when it comes to using the indoor heating plus cooling device. My whole childhood was harshly uncomfortable because she literally never wanted to use the oil furnace or A/C device. As an adult, clearly that is still the exact same. She never wants me to touch the temperature control component or utilize the energy efficient oil furnace plus cooling device that she purchased… For the past numerous months, I have been losing my mind while attempting to save up currency by staying with her. I finally moved out plus purchased a cabin for myself, thinking it was going to be entirely comfortable! Well… I pretty suddenly discovered, I also don’t prefer using my central heating plus cooling device. She was right, Heating plus A/C systems are a major pain in the butt, and they’re harshly pricey to operate plus to professionally maintain. I consistently provided my mother a strenuous time about trying to keep the pricey indoor air quality control appliances turned off, but now that I have our own central Heating plus A/C device, I don’t want to touch the control component either.

Wanted my own place, I thought…

There’s nothing more frustrating than living with your mom.

  • And I’m sorry if you’ve been in a similar boat as I have recently.

When I moved out to go to college I definitely didn’t expect that I would be back in 10 years. Or EVER. All of the things that I hated about living with my mom as a kid apparently have not changed. My whole childhood was extremely uncomfortable because she literally never wanted to use the furnace or air conditioning system. As an adult, clearly that is still the exact same. She never wants me to touch the thermostat or utilize the energy efficient furnace and cooling system that she purchased. For the past several months, I’ve been losing my mind while trying to save up money by staying with her. I finally moved out and bought a house for myself, thinking it was going to be so comfortable! Well… I pretty quickly discovered, I also don’t like using my central heating and cooling equipment. She was right, HVAC systems are a big pain in the butt. They’re extremely expensive to operate and to professionally maintain. I always gave my mom such a hard time about trying to keep the expensive indoor air quality control appliances turned off, but now that I have my own central HVAC system, I don’t want to touch the thermostat either.

Working from home and having issues with air quality

I’ve been working entirely from home for about three years now.

I was thrilled when I was able to arrange my workload so that everything could be handled online.

Avoiding rush-hour traffic, the struggle to park and strict work hours of the office has been such a relief. I’ve set up a home workspace with a good sized desk, comfortable chair, my computer and monitor. I’m able to dress in more casual clothes, listen to music and drink hot tea while I complete my tasks. Because my workload is by the project rather than by the hour, I need to be as productive as possible. Any distractions that slow me down result in a longer workday. For the first month that I worked from home, I suffered from headaches, congestion, sore throat and frequent bouts of sneezing. At first, I assumed I was coming down with a cold. When the symptoms didn’t go away unless I left the house, I realized that there was most likely an issue with my indoor air quality. I researched online and blamed the heating and cooling system. Checking the air filters, I found them clogged with dust and debris. I then scheduled professional maintenance with a local HVAC contractor. When the technician accessed the inner workings of the system, he discovered a significant amount of dust, lint and mold growth. He recommended that I invest in duct cleaning aw well. Once all of the services were completed, I noticed a significant improvement in the cleanliness and comfort of the whole house. Plus, the furnace and air conditioner no longer cost as much to operate.

Forgetting to open the flue on the fireplace

While we managed to get rid of most of the smoke before the guests arrived, the venue was downright cold inside

My sister Angela got married last year. Everything about Angela’s wedding, from the invitations and flowers to her dress and the cake were extravagant. She decided that she wanted her bridal shower to be held at a brand new, boutique restaurant right downtown. There were some problems with this demand. For one thing, there’s no parking near the venue, forcing everyone who attended to walk quite a distance. This wouldn’t have been so terrible if not for the time of year. The shower was held in March, and the weather was terrible. The temperature that day was eighteen degrees with several inches of snow on the ground and freezy rain falling from the sky. Because of the winter-like conditions, we wanted to make sure the venue was warm and comfortable once everyone arrived. My sister was adamant that there be a fire lit in the fireplace for ambience. Since the restaurant was brand new, no one had ever used the fireplace before. The employees who were assisting us, definitely had no idea what they were doing. They failed to open the flue and the whole place filled with smoke. We needed to open the door and windows for ventilation. The management refused to run the heating system with freezing cold air rushing in and the heat pouring out. While we managed to get rid of most of the smoke before the guests arrived, the venue was downright cold inside. Everybody was forced to keep their coats on and stand right up close to the fire. Fortunately the food was good, but I don’t think anyone had a very enjoyable experience.

Don’t let HVAC condensate ruin your day

I tend to overthink things when it comes to my house.

  • I’m always trying to stay one step ahead when it comes to repairs or mitigating bad possibilities.

And one of those possibilities is water damage. Throw in a water leak combined with exposure to electricity and I’ll bet up all night. There are so many different sources of water in a house. Even the HVAC has a level of condensate that can become a real problem. This is another reason I make sure that I have an HVAC professional checking and servicing the HVAC equipment twice a year. In our region, we lean on the heat pump to cool our homes. The HVAC cooling is the biggest heating and cooling concern we have. The winters are mild and that just doesn’t require a whole lot of heating. But we more than make up for that with our summer. There is just no way to get through the summer without a big dose of HVAC cooling. And a lot of HVAC cooling produces plenty of condensate. Of course, the HVAC equipment is designed to deal with the condensate. There is a drain line to carry the condensate safely away from the HVAC equipment and the house. However, that drain line can get clogged. When the HVAC condensate drain line is clogged, it forces that water back into the house. At that point it ends up in a drain pan and hopefully evaporates. However, if it doesn’t then water damage can ensue. This is why it’s essential to have an HVAC professional doing semi annual HVAC maintenance on your HVAC equipment.

There is a bonus to getting ductwork cleaning

I’ve been sort of ignorant when it comes to the HVAC equipment in our home.

I know the HVAC cabinet outside is part of the heat pump.

And I think the other thing inside is the air handler. Of course, I have a fairly close relationship with the thermostat. But there is a part of the HVAC system that I just didn’t even consider. That would be the ductwork. I just don’t think about it because I tend not to even see it unless I’m in the attic. And that’s a job for my husband. Actually, all the HVAC stuff is sort of on my husband. He changes the air filter each month. I know he does other stuff as well. I’m pretty sure we are part of the HVAC service plan the HVAC company offers. That’s because he used to set the HVAC maintenance appointments but forgot once and had to pay a service fee. So I felt sort of dumb when the HVAC technician asked me if our ductwork had ever been cleaned. What I found out was that it sure hadn’t since we bought the place. And so we called back and set up an appointment for the ductwork cleaning. The crew did a great job and the air ducts were cleaned thoroughly. Another thing I didn’t know about air ducts is that after the ductworking cleaning comes the ductwork sealing. This part actually will end up saving us money as it significantly increases the level of HVAC efficiency. And it will help keep the air ducts clean for a lot longer as well.

Broke the wireless thermostat trying to fix the heat

Help! I broke the climate control device! This was the text I had received from my mother early last Monday. I was headed to work and I had to make a U-turn to mum’s house once I reached the office. Since it was just a broken wireless thermostat, I did not need to have the cooling workmen accompany me. I wish I had asked them to come with me because it turns out I need them to help change the compressor on the central air conditioning unit. Mum had forgotten to schedule the quality AC service and the small issue of having ice on the compressor would have been solved. Now the compressor was completely burned and I needed to replace the entire unit with a new HVAC system. Though a new purchase was not on mum’s budget, she had to get the new zoned HVAC since her current one was not feasible. So when mum had woken up that morning she had tried switching on the cooling equipment and at first, it did not come on then when it did, it was only on for a minute before it went dead. The air ducts were clogged up with all sorts of debris and the HEPA filter had not been changed for an entire year so it was doing nothing to help with indoor comfort. I had always told mum of the importance of the HVAC service on a cooling unit. As a cooling specialist, I had seen a lot of people including entire companies ignore to tune up their commercial air conditioning systems which had cost them valuable time and money to fix the unit on a workday.

A chilled relaxed Sunday afternoon made better by the cooling system

Sundays are for taking it easy, just as the song goes, as easy as Sunday morning.

I love me some Sundays.

My Sundays are usually almost the same. I usually host a brunch for my family, then clean up the house and get everything ready for the week. I like relaxing with a book at the end of the day. I am currently reading a thriller. Today as I sat in my beautifully decorated living room, I felt the cooling effect from my central air conditioning and was grateful to have been at peace on a brutally hot day. To keep the cooling equipment working at such an optimal level, I made sure to religiously have the cooling specialist give my unit a good quality AC service. I could feel the zoned HVAC working quietly to deliver adequate temperatures. The kitchen was not as chilly as the living room since the kitchen was empty. I mean technology has improved these new HVAC systems. If the temperature was not satisfying to me, all I had to do was to adjust it using my wireless thermostat. As I sat there thinking about how fortunate I was, I remembered that I had recently upgraded the air cleaner to a HEPA filter to help with indoor comfort. Having the commercial air conditioning system at the office fail last week had made me grateful for my very own service. I had come home that night and scheduled a cooling workman to perform a HVAC service on the unit to clear the air duct when I saw what had been found in the vents of the system at the office. My vents were not as dirty but they did need a clean.

Selecting a cooling unit for my sister’s apartment

I was taking my sister to college and since she had missed out on the school accommodation, we had rented an apartment for her near the college.

  • Mum had requested that I make sure she was comfortable before coming back home.

I registered her in the school, we got the keys to the apartment and helped her settle in. Just when I was about to leave, my sister discovered that the central air conditioning unit was off, and switching it on using the wireless thermostat was not helping. She called out to me to come to help her find out the issue. I had interned at a cooling company for about a year and she was confident that I would help with indoor comfort. I knew enough about commercial air conditioning systems and residential units to save a life. The HEPA filter seemed clean enough. The management had informed us that a quality AC service had been performed on the cooling equipment and so I expected the unit to be in a good condition. I noticed that the air duct was leaking as there were pools of water near the unit. The cooling specialist recommended we purchase a new HVAC system which the building management was responsible for. I chose the zoned HVACsince it made more sense and was cheaper to install. The cooling workman had mentioned that it needed less frequent HVAC service than most units. The unit was installed before the day ended and my sister at least spent the night in a chill house. She was extremely excited about starting school but she was also focused on achieving her goals. She did not need to change the system until she graduated and now in her new apartment in the city, she has the same unit.

Creating an antique store of ancient and new central air conditioning units

I had owned a heating and a/c shop for a very long time and I was retiring.

There had been very many technological advancements in the heating and a/c units and with my old age, I fell off from keeping up with the rapidly changing technology. Now that I want to retire, I was thinking of turning my shop into a sort of museum for all ancient cooling units. One of the pieces of cooling equipment I had in the shop was the dial-up controller. Currently, there are wireless thermostats in the market and HEPA filters which of course have made the central air conditioning more efficient. Most of the units that end up in my store are the ones that have malfunctioned because of not getting quality AC service over their lifetime. While taking stock, I noticed some of the units I have were from the first inventions until the new HVAC systems such as the zoned HVAC unit. Before I opened my shop, I was a cooling specialist and had worked on numerous units including commercial air conditioning systems. I fixed a lot of units to help with the indoor comfort of all my customers. I was excited about my antique store and knew that even cooling workmen would purchase different components for customers who have older units while doing the annual HVAC service. The residents were excited about this as well as it would be educational and they would get a chance to show their children the first inventions. Currently, there were systems without air ducts which was something phenomenal for me as we have grown up with vented units. I am glad to witness this technology but also proud to uphold ancient technology.
