I am someone who always has their ear and eyes peeled for the latest developments in technology. Especially when it comes to heating and air conditioning technology. I love to know when a brand new invention on the HVAC market is existing. Because in the last 20 years alone they have come up with some pretty amazing things like smart thermostats, zoned heating and air conditioning system units, smart HVAC systems and even smart air vents for your central heating and cooling units! Now naturally since I am not a rich millionaire, I did not go out and buy every single one of these advancements in heating and air conditioning technology. But I did invest in a few things. One being the smart thermostat. The smart thermostat has proven to be a major godsend for me and has made running the central heating and air conditioning system so much easier and saves me on the energy use of it as well. The other thing I invested in were the smart air vents for my central heating and air conditioning system unit. The smart air vents are really nice because they can adjust themselves to make the air flow and hit the parts of the house that need it most without me having to direct it! It is almost like magic. These I invested quite a bit of money into, but it was well worth it believe me. I will always keep a look out for the latest and greatest in heating and air conditioning technology! What’s next? Only time will tell that.

 

Always on the look out

In the cold winters the first thing I like to do in the morning so long as it is not freezing, is to go and take a morning run.

Running on a cold but not freezing winter day is great and helps get the blood pumping and the body warm.

But the best part about coming back from these morning work out runs is my central heating system! I always set the thermostat on the wall to around 74 degrees this time of the year, and after doing that running and working up a small sweat in the cold, coming in to that central heating system with the thermostat set at 74 degrees is really refreshing. It also helps so that I do not get sick from having some sweat in me while being out in the freezing cold. It sort of evens things out. I have one of the best central heating and air conditioning systems on the market today. And it was not easy saving up for this HVAC unit. But when I finally did, it was like a milestone! I felt like I just won the lottery. And with the morning runs I take, I am glad that I have it. Because my old central heating and air conditioning system’s heating would have never been able to be as nice as the heating is now. That would effect my morning running work out that I do. In the summer time I take a break from the morning work outs because it is way too hot.

I don’t know about you, but I love going to the local library in the summer! They have the most awesome commercial air conditioning systems in them that blow away your residential heating and air conditioning systems you have at home.

There is no question about that.

I am not even a real book reader these days as I can get all my reading online. But I do make it a point in the summer to go to the local library just to take in that great commercial air conditioning system that they have. Commercial air conditioning and heating systems are much more powerful like I was saying. Also, the air quality that comes out of the commercial air conditioning system in the library is much cleaner than that of your basic central heating and air conditioning system you would have in your home. It is not as dry feeling and it has more moisture in the air. I wish they would make regular central heating and air conditioning system units act this way. I don’t know what on earth the trick is to all of this, but there has gotta be something that us normal people do not know about. Maybe I will just call my local heating and air conditioning company and ask to speak with one of their certified heat and a/c specialists to see if they know the answer to this deep technical question about commercial heating and air conditioning systems and the air quality. It would be very interesting to know and find out!

When I was young I used to go to my uncle’s summer home. In the area he had the summer home it was like this small little town right by the ocean that was great for bike riding. I would ride my bike on the most warm of summer days till I was sweating up a storm. Then I would stop at the local convenience store and buy these microwave cheeseburgers and eat them in the store with the great central air conditioning they had in there cranking! In this time microwaves were new and so was the concept of central air conditioning. So it was pretty awesome to have the concept of instant sandwiches in the microwave in the store, and then experiencing the central air conditioning was the extra added bonus after those long energetic bike rides I used to take. I really loved those days. We were all carefree and had to worry about nothing but going to school and having fun on the weekends and summers. That central air conditioning in the convenience store was a big deal back then. Not many convenience stores had central air conditioning. They would all have your standard window air conditioning units like we did in our homes. But there was something more special and powerful about central air conditioning. And believe me it felt good after all that bike riding in the warm sun on those hot afternoons in those days! If you wern’t there, you don’t even know what i’m talking about.

 

Residential heat and AC

I live in a very strange climate.

In the summer time it always seems that when the sun goes down it gets rather cool even if it is super hot in the day.

But when the sun rises in the morning it gets super hot almost right away! My central heating and air conditioning system sometimes has quite the work out. It can be cranking air conditioning throughout the day, then as soon as that sun goes down it either shuts off, or I have to flip the thermostat to the central heating for maybe a half an hour or so because it gets that cold! I do not know if this crazy climate has to do with global warming or if it was always this way in the part of the country I live in. I only moved here a few years ago from across the country, so I have no idea how it was back when. I may ask some locals here about that who grew up in this area because it does have me quite curious. The world is always changing both for good and for bad. You never know what each day is going to bring. But one thing I do know is that my central heating and air conditioning system has been going crazy ever since I have lived in this area. In the winter it is not too odd, it’s cold all the time. This only happens in the dead middle of the summer months of the year for some unknown reason I guess.

Central air conditioning can tend to get pretty dry sometimes.

Back in the day not many people had central heating and air conditioning. When the summer came, it was a window air conditioning unit and either the water hose outside or for us kids back then, we had a sprinkler. It was a clown face type one that had a hat on it, and the water would come through and pop the hat way up high in the air balancing it on the water, then it would soak us kids as we played under it. It was a really cool and cute little thing when I think back remembering. That was so long ago, but it does feel like yesterday. I am 51 years old now, and this was back when I was around 12 years old. There was actually something about those days and the window air conditioners as well as the hose and kiddie sprinkler that I preferred over the central air conditioning we all have today. And no it isn’t nostalgia or even the fact that the energy bills were so much lower running a window air conditioning system verses central air conditioning. It just seemed much more pure to me. That is what it is. Central air conditioning can tend to get pretty dry sometimes. But the window air conditioning system never felt that way at all. That is what the major difference is. I really do miss those days and would go back in time to them if it was possible. Yes I am a dreamer, but window air conditioning systems were better.

Let me give you a little inside scoop, that most people don’t define themselves by what they do for a living. I was at a party the other day, and someone said to me “so what do you do?” I responded by saying “I am a father and husband, and that takes up a lot of my time. I am also a writer and a podcaster, which is where my passion really lies.” The person was surprised and asked how much money I made podcasting, and I told them the truth — I made nothing. My day job is being an HVAC technician, but that isn’t “what I do” that is how I pay my bills! Don’t get me wrong, my work at the heating and cooling repair company is great, and I very much value my job. But once I clock out for the day, I stop being an HVAC tech. Don’t call me, don’t text me, don’t “at” me about HVAC work, I will do it the next time I am work. I enforce a very strong delineation between my work and home life — I don’t take personal calls at work, and I don’t work on HVAC stuff at home. I guess you could say that HVAC is my career, because I’ve worked in it for so long, and don’t plan on ever doing anything else. Being an HVAC technician is not who I am, however, it is what I do to put food on the table and pay the bills. I wish people would ask me about my podcast instead of my HVAC job.

My roommate is my grandmother, who is still acclimating to this country.

I was born and raised here, because my parents immigrated here before I came along.

It was only a few years ago that they finally convinced my grandma to join us in the United States. She is still getting used to it, but after a lifetime there may not be a lot she can change. One thing she had a big problem with is having men in our apartment. Anyone outside of the family is considered suspect by her. This presented a problem recently when the central HVAC system stopped working, and I needed some emergency repairs. I called a local HVAC company I have heard good thing about, and asked if they had a female tech they could send out. This was the easiest solution I could think of — to simply have a female HVAC tech come and do the work. The problem was they had no female HVAC techs, nor did the next two companies I called. In a bit of a snit, I posted about it on Facebook, and asked if the HVAC industry was even allowed to hire women. This generated a dumpster fire in the comments section, but it also put me in contact with a local woman who was an HVAC contractor. She was sheepish to inform me that she didn’t have any female HVAC techs at her company, either! But she was still HVAC certified, and offered to come over and work on my system personally, and do it free of charge.

 

Heating industry

It is just large enough to cool me off.

My folks raised me to be self-sufficient, and while I am not on their level, I think I do okay for myself. My folks were super old school, and I mean they hunted meat and grew veggies in the garden. Mom would hand make all of our clothes. Dad smoked cigarettes, but he grew his own tobacco plants and hand rolled them. Like I said, I am not on that level, but their lessons did take hold, so I understand why it is important to be able to take care of yourself. Growing up we never had air conditioning, for the obvious reasons, and as an adult that is the one creature comfort I can’t do without. I don’t have a central HVAC system, because I could never justify paying the huge installation price, but I do have a portable AC unit. It is about the size of a space heater, and I keep it in my front closet except for the hottest of summer days. It is just large enough to cool me off. It is strong enough for cooling down an entire room, but I always sit right in front of it and block the air vents so I get 100% of the conditioned air. If I was truly self sufficient I would supply my own power and spring for a geothermal heat pump, but for my needs a gas powered generator is enough. Aside from using the air conditioning unit once in a while, and watching movies on friday nights, I really don’t need a lot of power.

I had a very sticky situation at work the other day.

I have literally never run into anything like this before, and I wasn;t sure how to handle it.

I told the man and woman who owned the house, of course, and then I called it in to my boss. Part of me feels like I should have also called the police, but I guess it really isn’t my decision to do that. Our company has never worked on this house before, so at least I know it wasn’t one of my guys responsible. Basically, I found a small camera mounted inside the air vent of the main bathroom. It was so small it sat between the slats of the air vent, and had a full view of the bathroom. Before saying anything to the owners I checked every other air vent, grate, and exhaust port in the house, and found three more cameras. Whoever did this wouldn’t necessarily need any experience in HVAC work, but the fact they were all located in air vents was fishy to me. The HVAC contractor I work for was concerned about this, just on general principles because these customers are nice people. He called around to the other HVAC contractors and vendors in the area to find out if anyone else had worked that house. I never thought that would be something to check for, but from here on out a general HVAC inspection from me will always include checking for hidden cameras. This is some kind of crazy sick world we live in, isn’t it?
