Air quality is something I never thought about until I became a homeowner. I used to think it referred to the temperature of the air. You can have heated or cooled air quality. Actually, your indoor air quality is measuring the moisture and how clean it is. I have found that I am really sensitive to poor indoor air conditions. I own both a humidifier and dehumidifier. I feel super weak and geeky, but I need the systems and I just love them. In the winter having a humidifier pair with my heating system is great. I can set my heater a little lower because when the air feels more moist, it feels warmer. I don’t have to deal with static cling, chapped lips or bloody noses anymore. I also feel less sick in the wintertime when it is warm and moist. In the summer, removing the moisture from the home means less bugs, mold and bacteria forming. I also don’t break out as often or have issues with my furniture swelling. On top of controlling the moisture, I also use an air purification system to keep things clean. Having clean indoor air quality is important for your health. They say to seal up your home and keep it airtight. That means the same pollutants are circulating around in the home. Did you know the indoor air is always more polluted than outside? I use an air cleaner to freshen my air quality and move dust, smells and dirt. I get sick less often, experience fewer headaches and I have more energy during the day.

People who sell their homes must always be awful. I now have heard story after story of people getting jerked around and taken advantage of when buying a house. The issue is always the seller being greedy. The house I bought had a really awful seller. The guy wanted way too much for what the house was worth. He also lied to me about a lot of features. First, he told me that he was going to leave the washer and dryer in the laundry room for me. He also was going to remove the old wood stove from the living room since I didn’t want it. Lastly, I asked about the condition of the HVAC unit. The guy told me the system was brand new and worked great. Well after the two of us finally agreed on a price, I got the home inspection. I learned that the HVAC system was 17 years old and not all that great. The home inspector told me that the air conditioning on the system was pathetic. I wasn’t happy that I would need to move in and immediately buy a central HVAC system. I ended up buying my house anyway and got a bit of money knocked off for the HVAC. After moving into the home I realized that the woodstove was right in the living. I had to get a professional HVAC technician to remove it and a roof guy to repair the hole in my ceiling. I also had to buy a new washer and dryer since the seller took his. I was furious by the time I got all my things set up in the home.

My boyfriend decided to get our new house a smart thermostat. We have been updating little things to make the home look more modern. In the hallway I sanded all the wood doors and painted them. I updated the bifold on the HVAC closet to look a little more funky than just an ugly wooden door. I bought new switch plates, hallway lights, a cool smoke detector and I even added new door knobs too. The last touch was the thermostat. I wanted to leave the old beige thermostat. I know it didn’t go with the home decor, but it worked and was easy to operate. I just moved the plastic toggle anytime I wanted to raise or lower the temperature. I didn’t have to specify heating or cooling. The HVAC immediately clicked on when I messed with it too. It looked bad but got the job done. My boyfriend bought a smart thermostat and installed it himself. He didn’t buy a thermostat from our local HVAC company. Additionally, he didn’t make sure the thermostat was compatible with our system. Thirdly, he did the installation himself. A lot of things are wrong with the thermostat because of those three cases. The thermostat works, sort of. First, it isn’t really compatible with our system. We lost the emergency heating function in the wintertime and that stinks. Also, the thermostat has trouble learning our heating and cooling behaviors. It frequently will just stop heating and let our house get in the 60s. It really likes to tell us to change the air filter even if it is brand new. I think my boyfriend messed up something.

Some of the girls looked like they were in terrible pain. I understood a Brazilian was in a very sensitive area, but I had heard many women talk about how nice it felt when it was done. I talked my husband into going to the salon on the day I was going to have the Brazilian sugar wax done. I had read that sugar wax was more comfortable than regular wax. I thought about doing the procedure in my own home, but I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do the job properly. There was too much concern over overheating the sugar and burning my skin. I had also read that if you weren’t careful with how you pulled the hair out, it could actually cause a tear in the sensitive skin. This had me a bit worried. What happened if the specialist who did the sugar wax, wasn’t careful. I didn’t want to walk around with infected hair follicles. My husband started going through all the YouTube and blogs that involved Brazilian waxing and sugar waxing. When he came to bed that night, he told me that if I insisted on having that done, it was up to me, but there was no way I was dragging him along with me. He said he couldn’t stand to watch me go through that for the sake of my vanity. He bought an electric razor on his way home from work.

My husband gets all excited by new innovations in technology. We were one of the first families to invest in a bluray player. He continually upgrades his phone to make sure he’s got the latest features. About a year ago, he insisted we needed a smart thermostat. I went along with it because I figured this upgrade would help trim our energy bills. Plus, the shape of the thermostat and touchscreen are much more attractive than the old thermostat. Unfortunately, neither of us has much luck operating the smart control. It regularly sets the temperature so low during the middle of the night that we wake up shivering. The thermostat is supposed to learn from our adjustments. Despite the fact that we get up nearly every night at 2 AM to bump up the temperature setting, the termostat hasn’t caught on yet. Now, my husband is talking about investing in a whole-home automation system. This would include surveillance cameras, motion-activated lighting, an alarm system, automated door locks and all sorts of sophisticated features. While I would love to make our house safer and more secure, I’m worried. I think we’re going to get locked out of our own house. It’s very possible the police will show up when we try to get inside. I imagine all sorts of sirens going off every time I try to walk out to the mailbox. Plus, I know the system sends alerts whenever there’s an intruder on the property. I am assuming our dog will be considered an intruder. I keep trying to talk my husband out of the automation system. I’d rather just buy a better lock for the front door.

Through an app on my smartphone, tablet or laptop, I can watch real-time video of the property. I have access to every angle of the yard, front porch and back door. There’s no way someone could step onto the property without us knowing about it. At the end of the workday, when I pull into the driveway, lights automatically come on. The garage door responds to the location of my phone and lifts to allow me inside.

The first cleaning lady that came to interview was terrific. Not only did she show me an impressive resume, she was a mother as well. There was a bond there that allowed me to feel comfortable knowing the she would be in my house. It has been six months since I hired this cleaning lady and it has indeed changed everything for the better.

I guess I didn’t have the right idea the time commitment required when opening a new business. There are so many details that have to be gotten right in order to do more than simply survive. Opening my own business wasn’t some whim where I was just hoping to make any sort of living. I spent years learning my craft and then more years planning to go out on my own. So I wanted a business that would thrive and grow. This is why it sort of seems absurd that I would consider being the cleaning lady for my shop. I think I just didn’t consider a commercial cleaning company when I first opened. I figured that the staff and I would simply be our own maid service. That was a really stupid plan by the way. First off, the folks I hired weren’t at all interested in working all day and then acting as a cleaning service once we closed the door. Second, I simply just didn’t have the time, I had much more pressing issues to consider. It finally came to a head when I kept pushing off my cleaning lady duties on the staff. They finally had enough and told me that I either got a cleaning service or a commercial cleaning company or they would walk. It was an impassioned plea because all of them very much wanted to keep working with me. They just weren’t willing to be a cleaning service any longer. Frankly, it hit me hard and I was embarrassed that it had come to this. That very hour, I started calling commercial cleaning companies to get bids on their cleaning service.

There is no doubt that if my work wasn’t my passion, I might rethink the way I live. It’s part of the package that I have to oversee different project over months and sometimes years. This means that I have to actually be in the region where the project is taking place. I don’t get to simply show up from time to time to get an update on progress. So short term rental allow me a base from which to work from. Putting down roots is just not in the cards at this juncture. Perhaps the next job will be one where I can fly in and out from a permanent home base. But right now, I rely on corporate housing and short term rentals to accommodate what I do for a living. It’s not the best situation in the world but it works for me. While I don’t have a lot of stuff of my own because that just doesn’t make sense. Why would I pay for a home or apartment so a bunch of stuff could live there while I lived elsewhere. I could be on a project of six months and then it’s on to somewhere else. So having a short term rental with fully furnished apartments is the way to go for me. I don’t have to worry about leases since I go with monthly leasing options. Perhaps this will not last all that much longer. I do find the thought of having a home base and buying my own couch really appealing. But until that happens, I’ll continue to be most grateful for having the options that short term apartment rental affords me.

I’ve seen tough times before and I’ll probably see tough times again.

But, I didn’t expect it to be easy either. The HVAC business I own is almost five years old. In that time, I have been able to grow my business from just me to me and a couple of techs. However, I really want to push further to grow this business. Now that I have a bit of solid footing, I plan on growing using SEM and SEO services. Online marketing is the main element of the marketing that I want to do. I have heard some wonder what online marketing can do that more traditional advertising doesn’t.
