It’s weird that at the top of the things I’m going to miss about this community is the HVAC company.

• That’s not exactly the sort of thing you’d normally hear I guess.

But in the short time we were a member of that community, the HVAC professionals were great to us. My wife and I moved here for work and thought that this would be the place that we would stick and start a family. We had both had to relocate several time in order to get ahead in our careers. So having this house and being able to renovate it the way we wanted to was a dream come true. There were plenty of great professionals to help us with our vision for the house. But none were more expert or more on top of stuff than the HVAC company. They came recommended by just about anyone we asked. I even asked a stranger in the grocery store and sure enough, she recommended this HVAC company. They took such great care with the heating and cooling in our home. We wanted the latest in residential HVAC but were on a bit of a budget. Still, we got great HVAC equipment and all the HVAC technology that we were hoping for. Along with zone controlled HVAC, we had a smart thermostat as well that controlled all the heating and cooling in our home. We had just finished off the kitchen renovations when my wife found out she had to relocate again. That was a tough one but the HVAC company even helped us sell our house. They provided promotional material for prospective buyers on the new HVAC equipment. And they even provided me a list of recommended HVAC companies to help us with our next house in our new town.

But this year, I’m going to enjoy the sunroom a whole lot more throughout our summer due to some HVAC technology

I already miss the Winter. That’s because I love the type of Winter weather that I now get to enjoy. It’s just so much better than what I lived with for nearly 45 years. I never got accustomed to a Winter that needed a gas furnace for heating. For sure, I was so thankful to have that gas furnace when it came to having a cozy home during those rough Winters. Still, when I had the chance to move to the south, I went for it. The company I work for had an opening in the southern office. When I went down there for the interview, I noticed right away that there was zone controlled HVAC in the building. Every boss I spoke with had a thermostat in their office. So I knew that trading a gas furnace for a heat pump wasn’t going to be bad when it came to the office. I knew that I was going to have plenty of air conditioning comfort if I were to get the job. I did get the job and I have really enjoyed living down here. I also met my wife down here which is pretty wonderful as well. But this time of year, I’m sort of in mourning when it comes to the fact that Winter is over. The temperatures are rising and soon, the air conditioning will be on pretty much all the time. But this year, I’m going to enjoy the sunroom a whole lot more throughout our summer due to some HVAC technology. We had the HVAC company come out and install a ductless heat pump inside our sunroom. So this summer instead of feeling like it’s an oven out there, I’ll be able to enjoy some cooling comfort instead.

I understand why I was so hesitant to finally ditch the paycheck and go freelance.

That was certainly the plan.

I spent four year inside the radiant heating of a dorm room to get an education that helped pursue my passion. However, I would need to spend some time inside the commercial HVAC of a corporate entity first. There really wasn’t any other way around it for me. I didn’t want to work for a big company but I didn’t have the money or the experience to go out on my own from the beginning. I started out in a cubicle nearly a dozen years ago. By the time the pandemic hit, I had been promoted to the floors that had zone controlled HVAC. I was definitely rising through the ranks of that company. And indeed, I loved getting those paychecks every 2 weeks. I spent plenty of time inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office but I made a good living doing it. Still, there was part of me that felt like I was completely selling myself short. It took a global health crisis for me to finally realize that it was time for me to spread my own wings. Working from the central air conditioning of my home really did change my whole perspective when it came to my job. In 2022, I decided to go out on my own and keep working from my house but in a freelance capacity. It’s very scary in some senses but it’s also working out really great. and, I have a ductless heat pump inside my home office that rivals the zone controlled HVAC of my old office.

I’m actually not suffering and we are already deep into the rebirth of Spring around here.

Normally, by the time I’m watching all this college hoop, I’m also suffering due to allergies.

I have such severe pollen allergies that I’m often falling asleep and missing great tournament basketball upsets this time of year. But not this year thanks to air purification. Actually, I’m staying awake inside my house this time of year because I’m not having to take the amount of allergy meds I normally have. Of course, it’s still no picnic if I have to be outside with all the pollen this time of year. But being inside my house is now a pollen free zone thanks to the whole home air purification system. This type of air purifier works within the HVAC equipment. It uses ultraviolet light to eradicate any and all airborne contaminants. That means all the bacteria that might be causing odors gets zapped. That means the cat dander or cold virus gets zapped. And for me, the fact that all the tree pollen and grass pollen get zapped out of my air is so liberating. But the whole home air purification system isn’t just about making my home a pollen free refuge. The whole home air purification system is also producing the best indoor air quality we could possibly get. Not only does the house smell so fresh and clean all the time, it’s improving our respiratory health and our immune response. Having really healthy air has made such an incredible difference already. But also knowing that I won’t have to deal with pollen inside my home this Spring has made a tremendous difference in my life.

My dad was the type who always believed in paying for quality things and then taking care of them.

He was right and I try to live by the same standard.

I grew up in a pretty normal house. We had central air conditioning and I had my own room. But dad and mom were not frivolous with their money. If we walked inside the commercial HVAC of a restaurant, it was to sit down and enjoy a nice meal. Just going out to eat was a big deal and a treat for us. My parents would much rather spend money on groceries than waste it on junk food or fast food restaurants. Dad was also on top of taking care of the equipment that took care of him. He was always quick to do his own oil changes on the cars. He was also all over taking care of HVAC equipment. My dad was really good at working on just about anything that was mechanical in nature. But he knew enough to stay away from the heating and cooling equipment. The only people he allowed to touch the HVAC equipment were certified HVAC technicians. My dad believed in HVAC maintenance as much as he believed in car maintenance. Changing the oil in the car was just as important as having an air conditioning tune up in the Spring. I too find that HVAC maintenance is simply essential. I’m going on 17 years without a single blip when it comes to heating and cooling comfort in my home. That has everything to do with never missing a seasonal HVAC maintenance appointment. In fact, now that we are well into March, I’ll be calling the HVAC company to have them come out and do the air conditioning tune up real soon.

I now understand what is meant by an offer I couldn’t refuse.

• While I wasn’t in some sort of gangster situation, I was definitely made an offer that would have come with some consequences had I refused.

The offer was made inside the zone controlled HVAC of the executive conference room at work. Just walking in that space with its own thermostat was enough to unsettle me. I had been summoned to meet with some folks that were way above my station inside the commercial HVAC of my cubicle. I was now on the floor where there was zone controlled HVAC. I was nervous right away and even though the air conditioning was on, I could feel myself start to sweat. But I was soon greeted by some of the executives of my division who wanted me to relocate and take on a flailing branch. This was a big chance for me and would absolute fast track my career. At the same time, my wife and I had put down roots in this community and weren’t planning on leaving. In fact, I’d only gotten to enjoy the new residential HVAC in my home for about six months before that meeting. Needless to say, I couldn’t turn it down. And man, I hated leaving that house with the very best heating and cooling you can find. But my wife reminded me that I had put so much into my career that this was an opportunity I had to grab. I’m so lucky to have a partner like that who believes in me. She too loved that house and the quality heating and air. Yet, we are starting renovations on our new place and that also includes the HVAC equipment.

It’s Spring again and while I’m glad to see everything green sort of exploding with new life, I also know what’s coming.

• Sure, I love this time of year.

And as lovely and mild as our Winter is, the Spring is just that much more lovely. And this Spring, I’m determined to stay in the moment and enjoy this special time of year. But still, the notion that we are just a few months away from high heat and humidity never leaves my consciousness. Our Summer represents the toughest part of my year by far. Dealing with all that heat for four or five months is absolutely worth not having to have a gas furnace to survive a Winter. Air conditioning my home can be a bit of a dance. On the one hand, I’m very thankful to have the heat pump to provide the air conditioning we need to manage that sort of heat. But on the other hand, too much air conditioning kills the checking account and can make it tough for me to even go outside. So you have to walk a fine line between getting acclimated to the heat and having plenty of the cooling comfort that comes from the heat pump. This year, thanks to new HVAC technology, I have a new arrow in my quiver. The HVAC company recently installed a smart thermostat inside my home. Believe me, I’m so happy not to have to mess around with programming the digital thermostat throughout the Summer. This was something I did on a near weekly basis in order to mitigate the costs of air conditioning. Thanks to the smart thermostat, I won’t even have to bother with checking the thermostat setting as it’s going to take care of all of that.

When I got the text to come over and hold the flashlight for my neighbor, I knew it was a bad thing.

Earlier that particular evening, I had slipped out of the air conditioning of my home for my evening walk.

These days, after spending all day inside the commercial HVAC of the office, I don’t come home and plop down in front of the TV. Nope, I get home, change and then head out to the gym, for a walk, some pickleball or whatever. I just make sure that I get some exercise after spending the day inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office. On my walk that evening, I noticed my neighbor outside with the HVAC cabinet so I walked over. Turns out the air conditioning had gone out and he was going to try and fix it himself. For sure, this guy is great with his hands and is tops when it comes to taking care of household projects. However, heating and cooling equipment are a different animal altogether. I gently reminded him that perhaps it would be easier to simply call the HVAC technician. But he’s the sort who doesn’t really believe all that much in HVAC professionals. My HVAC equipment gets seasonal HVAC maintenance twice a year. He doesn’t believe in HVAC maintenance. And that also might be why my HVAC unit was running and his wasn’t. So I ended up going over to hold the flashlight for an hour before he finally gave up. The next morning, there was an HVAC company van in the driveway.

When I sold my company for all that money, I knew things would change.

• But at the same time, I also knew that I’d always be me no matter where I lived or the amount of money in the bank.

I would have been just fine simply upgrading the HVAC equipment and staying in our old house. Yet, part of me selling the business was to give back to my wife for all she has sacrificed to support me in my passion. So indeed, we updated the heating and cooling equipment but that was only to sell the old house. Now, we live in a big house inside one of the oldest and wealthiest parts of town. It’s nice but it all feels a bit over the top to me. There were so many renovations that had to be done to the house when we first got it. From the residential HVAC to flooring to the kitchen, it was all upgraded. So much went on that my wife sort of lost sight of the small guest cottage on the back of the property. So this space became my area to do my thing when I wanted to get out of the central air conditioning of the main house. The guest cottage is nothing fancy but it’s simple and comfortable which is all I need. However, I will say that the new ductless heat pump really does make a big difference. I just love having such high quality heating and air in my little private spot. My wife wanted to aim her decorating and renovations at the guest cottage not too long ago. I deflected that intent as I just want to feel normal inside a normal little cottage with great heating and cooling.

I rent a barn from a guy and I teach gymnastic lessons there.

He makes a decent chunk of change with what I pay him monthly.

It is nice for me to store all my equipment and conduct lessons not at my home. The condition of the barn isn’t too hot though. The bathroom is always gross. I tried cleaning it but it was quite dirty and stained looking. There is also standing water in the bathroom at all times. The barn main area isn’t great either. The floor has pieces coming up. I have tried to do some repairs to ensure a flat surface. I am not the owner and I put folding mats over top of it. So no harm, no foul you know? The biggest concern is the roof though. At first I thought it was just a drywall issue on the ceiling. Pieces of drywall would frequently fall and expose the beams of the roof. I would clean up the pieces and just conduct business like usual. When water started leaking around the lights, I knew there was a major concern here. I have contacted the guy about the condition of his roof. He hasn’t answered me. I hate to push too hard and be a problem. I don’t want to raise my rent. I am guessing he will charge me more if he needs a new roof. How long can a roof leak water? I am thinking it is a fire hazard when water leaks through the lighting. I don’t want it to be dangerous for my students either.
