My buddy and I both grew up in families of unusual cultures, as well as that meant we both had unusual meals on the supper table as adolescents.

My partner comes from an Italian family while I come from a South African family. Well I was used to growing up eating braai for special occasions, my partner’s supper table advertised pastas as well as tomato sauces in contrast. But the difference between the two of us just made things more interesting. It would have been more boring if we had grown up in the exact same cultures as well as had nothing to bring to the table. Unfortunately we have a lot more differences that are far beyond anything that is cultural. My buddy and I have unusual tastes when it comes to indoor temperatures for one. My partner prefers it warmer in the condo while I like it colder. It means that we often conflict over the temperatures we said the control unit to throughout the afternoon as well as night. In addition to the temperature differences, my partner as well as I also want a unusual eating system for the house. My buddy and I need to replace the crappy electric boiler that is in here right now, however we cannot agree on the replacement heating system. My partner wants to go through the hassle of getting radiated flooring, he doesn’t realize the difficulty of maintenance. Sporadically the floor is to be ripped up as well as redone if there is a problem with a part of the radiant flooring. If there is water involved, there is typically risks of leaks as well as water harm. I hope I can convince him otherwise in regards to his feelings on radiant heated flooring.

There were so many things about this relocation that had me a bit frazzled.

For one thing, I’m nearing the end of my career and jumping to a new office was not what I had planned. But that was part of the succession plan the company wanted so I was in. This new office is awesome. It even has zone controlled HVAC. There is a thermostat right inside my office. I can’t tell you how nice it is to be able to customize the heating and cooling inside my office. That’s sure not the way it was back up north. I worked in an office where I had to bring a space heater for the winter and a fan for the summer. The commercial HVAC in that building wasn’t the best. So I’m completely knocked out by this new commercial HVAC and the zone controlled HVAC. I’m equally knocked out by the heat pump in my home. When I left the north, I wasn’t so sure that a heat pump could replace the gas furnace when it came to my heating needs. Granted, I’m further south now but that doesn’t mean there is no need for heating. So I was a bit skeptical when I encountered the first good cold snap in my new house. I had seen the forecast and was prepared to get that old space heater out. But the heat pump was amazing and took care of my heating needs like it was nothing. I’m just so pleased that all the stuff that I was so nervous about has turned out to be so great. And when I retire, I won’t have far to move because I’m already in the land of the heat pump.

Being honest with myself about what I can and can’t do can be complicated.

Too often, I don’t do something that I clearly could do with some training and experience.

And then, I catch myself in over my head on other things that appeared to be no brainers. It’s a tricky thing really. When it comes to looking after stuff inside the central air conditioning of my home, I’m not terrible at it. I’m actually fairly handy. I can do most of the stuff on my wife’s list of things for me to accomplish. But I also make sure that I know my limitations. And when it comes to the heating and cooling equipment, it’s hands off for me. I think hanging around one time with the HVAC technician while he did the HVAC maintenance was important. I got a first hand view of just how much these HVAC professionals have to know. There is so much training and certification that goes into being an HVAC professional. There were times when I would think that I could recharge the HVAC refrigerant or something like that. I mean, if they sold it at the hardware store, I didn’t see why I couldn’t figure it out. But that all changed when I got to see just how complex things can be inside that HVAC cabinet. We get seasonal HVAC maintenance every year. This has resulted in flawless heating and cooling since we had the HVAC unit installed. So we haven’t had the need for an HVAC repair. But if and when we do, I’ll be calling the HVAC company right off the bat.

However, with a swamp cooler, there is no humidity balance like with the modern HVAC technology like a heat pump.

I can still remember Summers at my grandparents. My mom raised us by herself and she often worked a couple of jobs to do it. So while she was inside the commercial HVAC of her work, we were at our grandparents during the day. It was really pretty awesome as they lived out in the country. There was a lake, woods and all sorts of stuff for a young lad to get into. My sister stayed pretty close to my grandma. But I was out of the cooling and into the heat of summer all day, every day. I think back to the cooling method my grandparents used. It was not the heat pump or any sort of central air conditioning. They had what we call a swamp cooler. That’s a colloquial term from this region to described an evaporative cooler. This sort of cooling method uses the evaporation process to lessen the temperature inside a home. It’s fairly effective at dropping the temperatures a bit. And around here during the Summer, any relief is good relief when it comes to the heat. However, with a swamp cooler, there is no humidity balance like with the modern HVAC technology like a heat pump. A heat pump reduces the humidity level as part of the air conditioning process. That’s not the case with an evaporative cooler. I can remember that house always having a bit of a bleach smell because my grandma was always fighting the mold and mildew from all that heat and humidity. When I reflect on those days, it makes me all the more grateful to have great residential HVAC and perfect air conditioning.

When I went out on my own, I wasn’t so interested in starting my business at home.

• I got a first hand and up close look at what working from the central air conditioning of home looked like during the pandemic.

And it wasn’t great. However, that working remotely instead of inside the zone controlled HVAC of the office was the push I needed to go out on my own. This was always the plan. I have never really wanted to do anything but be my own boss. However, there is a learning curve that one much endure to get good at what I do. And that learning curve took place inside the commercial HVAC of a corporate office for more than a dozen years. But once I was home during the pandemic, I knew it was time for me to move forward with my plan to go out on my own. I had the money and I had a small team. What I didn’t have was an office. And since money was tight, I decided to get the cheapest place we could get. The office is in an old strip mall. It fits our needs as far as space and price. But we sure had to do something about the commercial HVAC which was awful. That led to us having the HVAC professionals come out and install a ductless multi split system for heating and cooling. I’m so pleased with the ductless heat pumps. They do a great job and I’m super impressed with the level of quality heating and air we’re getting from this style of heating and cooling equipment.

I’m actually not suffering this Spring.

I’m not suffering from the deluge of pollen of from a stinky house. And I killed both those birds with one stone. All it took was an HVAC upgrade to make my life so much better. And I’m not the only one either. My wife is also so excited to be able to finally host dinner parties and cocktail hours once again. For the longest time, due to the stinky air in our home, we could not have folks over. It was just too embarrassing to have folks come by and see their reaction when they first get a whiff of the indoor air. Of course, we did all we could do to mask that smell and it was fairly successful. But as soon as the heat pump kicked on the smells came right back and all those deodorizers were not a solution. It was actually the indoor air odor that got us to the HVAC professionals to talk about air purification. They explained to us that the only way we could really remove the odors was to remove the bacteria causing the odors. I guess I didn’t have that great an idea of what was causing the odors. I really didn’t know that the bacteria hung in the air like that. But there’s so much suspended inside our indoor air. And with the whole home air purification system, we are addressing all of it. The bacteria causing the odors are now gone. Along with that bacteria, I’m also happy to have a pollen free home. That too is removed from the indoor air thanks to the new air purifier. It’s been a lovely Spring thanks to air purification.

It’s now time to give the HVAC professionals a call. We are fully into Spring now and it’s time to have the HVAC technician come out. I start every Spring off with an air conditioning tune up. This ensures that our heat pump is ready for the big load of cooling that we’ll ask of it soon. Additionally, getting the HVAC maintenance also keeps the heat pump working at its most efficient. And that helps save money when it comes to those cooling costs. But this Spring, I think I’m taking a different and more logical route to saving on air conditioning. We are just into the middle of March and already I’m hearing heat pumps start up. The temperature has gotten into the 80’s a few times and folks around here are reaching for the air conditioning. This is pretty normal I guess and what I’ve done in the past as well. But this year, I decided to check up a bit before reaching for the thermostat. Instead of going to the air conditioning right away, I’m leaving the windows and doors open for another month or two. It’s time for me to really get acclimated to the higher temperatures around here. For sure, that will help lessen the demand for air conditioning in our home. And I love saving money anyway I can. But I’m also really glad to get more acclimated to the heat and humidity so I’m not just staying inside the central air conditioning of my home all Summer. I feel like I’ve been doing that the last few years and that seems like such a waste of time. So this year, I’m resisting the urge to pour on the air conditioning this early in the Spring.

It gets searingly hot here in the Summer

Okay so maybe I went over the top on the tree house for my kid. But I loved every minute of it and I’m hanging out in the tree house as well. This might be odd to most folks and I guess I sort of get that. I am a grown man who spends 50 plus hours inside the zone controlled HVAC of work. I’m a husband and father who takes his family life very seriously. It’s really the most important facet in my life. When I was a kid, my home life wasn’t all that great. My parents tried but were pretty stuck in self destructive habits. We all lived in a tiny house that didn’t even have residential HVAC. There was a stove for heating with wood and fans for cooling. That was it. My other friends had cool forts and tree houses but that wasn’t the case for me. This is probably why I went so crazy with this tree house for my son. It started out simply enough. It was a father son project that just continued to grow. But the more we designed and built, the cooler the whole thing really was. So it only made sense for me to have the HVAC professionals come out to put in some residential HVAC in the tree house. It gets searingly hot here in the Summer. And I wanted to be sure that me and my boy could still enjoy our spot in trees throughout all that heat. The ductless heat pump works perfectly when it comes to providing that cooling comfort we need during the Summer heat.

I spent much of the Winter out in my garage.

After finally dealing with that space, I’ve found that I love puttering around out there.

The Spring is in full bloom down here and I’m already hearing the heat pumps kick on in the neighborhood. Air conditioning is already on the menu. Normally, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the garage once the heat gets going. Like most garages, it gets unholy hot out there. There wasn’t any ductwork extended to the garage. So the garage was not ever part of the central air conditioning of our home. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not enjoy air conditioning each and every day once it gets hot. Last year’s Spring cleaning was taken to another level. My wife and I always give the house a deep cleaning early in the Spring each year. We finish that off with having the HVAC professionals come out to do the ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing. That’s always the capper to our deep cleaning. Well last year, I decided to take on bringing some order and cleanliness to the garage after years of neglect. I happened to be knee deep in that process when the HVAC technicians came to do the ductwork cleaning. That’s when they suggested that I have a ductless mini split installed so I could use my new garage space all Summer. What an amazing suggestion that turned out to be. I had a ductless heat pump installed just two weeks later and have never looked back. Now if anybody wants to find dad, he’s in the garage enjoying the quality heating and air from the ductless mini split.
