My air conditioning was emitting a strange, hard to hear whistling sound recently. If I was watching TV or doing other things, I could not hear it, but when I was trying to sleep it was a distraction. The whistling noise only powered up when the air conditioning was on. It wasn’t consistent, making this even more annoying because if it was, I’d learn to tune it out. It was making me think I was crazy! No one else in my family could hear it! But I have not been getting good sleep in over a week, so I decided to call up our air conditioner company. The technician came out and readjusted the little door that closes the air filter. The whistling sound stopped! Apparently, my husband had not closed the little door when he changed the filter last week. Air escaping through the little gap in the door was the cause. I am glad it was such a self-explanatory fix but I wish I had thought of this myself; it would have saved money! At least I know I wasn’t crazy, though – that the sound existed even if no one else could hear it. I hope I sleep well tonight. I bet I will, since the sound is gone.
Why is my air conditioner whistling?
My air conditioner has been making this strange whistling sound lately.
The sound is almost imperceivable but it is there.
If I’m watching TV or busy doing other things, I can’t really hear the whistling sound. But when I’m trying to fall asleep at night, the sound is very distracting. The whistling noise only starts up when the air conditioner kicks on. It’s not a constant sound. I think that makes it even more annoying. If it whistles constantly, I could probably learn to tune it out. It’s making me feel like I’m going crazy. The rest of my family says that they can’t even hear the noise. But I haven’t been getting a good night’s sleep in over a week so I decided to call up our air conditioning supplier. The HVAC technician came out and simply readjusted the little door that closes in the air filter. As soon as he did that, the whistling sound stopped. Apparently my husband had not closed the little door correctly when he changed the filter last week. Air rushing through the little gap in the door is what was causing that whistling noise. I’m glad it was such an easy fix but I wish I had thought to try opening and closing the air conditioning vent door myself. It would have saved me a little bit of money. At least I know I wasn’t crazy, though. That sounds really existed even if no one else could hear it. I hope I get a good night’s sleep tonight. I bet I will since the sound is gone.
Getting older makes fitness a bigger priority
I have realized that keeping fit becomes more challenging as I get older. There was a time when I was able to eat anything I wanted and exercise for only twenty to thirty minutes per day. I never put on a pound. I maintained my flexibility, strength and stamina without much effort. After having three kids, it was necessary to become much more diligent to a strenuous workout regiment. I also became more conscientious about the quantity and quality of food I consumed. When I was in my mid forties, I again saw a change in my body. It was easier for me to gain weight and I struggled to keep my flexibility. At that stage, I became a vegetarian and changed my workouts to sixty-minute sessions. I have now entered my mid fifties and I’m finding it difficult to keep the weight off and maintain my strength. I can no longer manage the same amount of pushups I once did. There’s a bit of softness around my belly that I’m not happy with. I have more aches and pains to deal with. I have stiffness from arthritis in my fingers and old injuries that bother me. I am very good about sticking with my morning workout sessions. I devote more time to my warmup and stretching than I used to. I am conscientious about combining cardio and whole-body strength training. I vary between jumping rope, cycling and running to get my heart pumping. I include lunges, squats, burpees and abdominal crunches. Although it’s not fun to see a decline in my physical abilities, I know that my commitment to physical fitness has been worthwhile for me. My peers are undergoing surgeries, taking prescription medication and have sacrificed a good deal of mobility by being sedentary.
I love my stationary bike
A few years ago, my husband gave me a stationary bike for my birthday.
- I was really happy with the gift.
It was especially thoughtful because I prioritize my physical fitness. I make a point to workout every day for around an hour. Due to my location in the country, joining a gym isn’t really convenient. I’d need to drive forty minutes each direction. I just don’t have the time to keep up with a membership. Because of the weather in my local area, outdoor workouts are rarely possible. We deal with high heat, humidity, cold, wind, rain, sleet and snow. For most of the year, I’m stuck exercising indoors. I have arranged a home gym that includes a weight bench, yoga mat, free weights and assorted accessories. There are those days when I feel exhausted, sore or just don’t have any motivation. The stationary bike is the ideal solution. I can sit on a padded seat, listen to music and pedal at whatever speed. I typically read on my iPad while I ride the bike. The operation of the bike is so quiet that I can use it at any time of day or night without disturbing anyone else. The stationary bike allows my joints a rest from the jarring impact of high intensity aerobics. It still burns a great deal of calories in a brief time. I can select from a variety of programs, keep track of my workouts and increase rewards by adding resistance or pedaling faster. I only use the bike once or twice per week. It’s such a fun workout that I feel as if I’m cheating.

Running with my son’s dog
The dog is very experienced with running on the leash, because she was excellent about stopping at the crosswalks.
For the past week, I’ve been hosting my son’s dog while he’s on a vacation. The dog is only three years old, 60 pounds and an abundance of energy. She continually brings me a ball to play catch with or a rope for tug-of-war. She also interrupts my exercise sessions. She paws at me whenever I start warming up, stretching or doing my ab crunches. She tugs on my sleeves and pant legs if I attempt to lunge or squat. I finally figured out that taking the dog on a run might help get rid of some of her energy. My son regularly jogs with her. He told me that they complete eight-minute miles. I’m not that fast. Although I run long distances on a regular basis, I am rather slow. I am 5r years old and 5’ 1” tall. My son is 29 years old and over six feet tall. When the dog and I first started out, she literally dragged me down the road. She wouldn’t settle down at a comfortable pace. I finally had to change to a walk. After we’d kept that pace for several miles, the dog began to look a bit tired. I slowly sped up until she and I reached the ideal speed for me to run. It was such a pleasure to run with the dog. It was a warm, sunny morning, and we chose a paved path that travels through the woods. The dog is very experienced with running on the leash, because she was excellent about stopping at the crosswalks. We put in a little over three miles. When we eventually returned home, the dog and I were both thirsty, panting and tired. We drank a lot of water.

Working out in chilly conditions
It’s the beginning of November, and for the past few weeks, the weather has been chilly and wet.
I switched from loving my workouts outdoors on the back deck to the cramped space inside the house.
I am fortunate to have a spot where I can stretch, weight train, jump rope and perform lunges, squats and ab crunches, it’s kind of tight. I’m always worried about causing damage to something. I realize that Winter is on the way and my opportunity to head outside again is minimal. Today was finally bright and sunny. For the first time in weeks, the forecast wasn’t calling for raining non stop. The skies were blue and the clouds were white. I was so excited to carry my yoga mat, free weights, jump rope, water bottle, phone and cordless speaker onto the deck. I stepped outside and was disappointed by how cold the air felt. There was an aggressive and chilly wind blowing. It was necessary to bundle up in layers to complete an outdoor workout. I put on a thermal long-sleeved shirt under a T-shirt and zip-up hoodie. I wore sweatpants. I still needed to wear my hood up and tie it tight. It was a challenge to get warm and loosen up my joints and muscles. It required some extra time jogging in place, skipping and stretching before I was ready to really exert myself. I always work out for an hour, but this particular workout seemed to last longer than usual. It was discouraging and disappointing. I have accepted the fact that I am going to be stuck inside for the next 6 to 8 months. I would really like to join a gym but the travel time is just too much for me.

I Had My Furnace Serviced Much Later Than Usual
After he was done inspecting everything, he confirmed that my old furnace was running efficiently and that he didn’t notice any complications.
The temps dropped a lot multiple weeks ago and I was forced to turn my A/C method off and fire up my old furnace for the first time in many months. I hadn’t been paying attention to the weather so I wasn’t expecting the decrease in temperatures. There was little time for myself and others to call an Heating and Air Conditioning service tech to come work on the oil furnace before turning it on, although I prayed that it could heat my house without any issues. Thankfully, it ran certainly well and my house was kept nice and cozy. The bad thing though, was that since my house was nice and snug, I kept forgetting to contact the Heating and Air Conditioning company to hire an Heating and Air Conditioning service tech. There were no heating issues to remind me! Last weekend though, I finally had the option to relax and cross things off of my to-do list. At the top of my list was calling up the Heating and Air Conditioning serviceman. Lucky for me, a lot of the homes in my area had already had their gas and oil furnaces took care of before the cooler weather so there was no wait list. The Heating and Air Conditioning service tech was able to service my oil furnace that afternoon. After he was done inspecting everything, he confirmed that my old furnace was running efficiently and that he didn’t notice any complications. He was ecstatic that I had called him even though my oil furnace was running smoothly. According to him, a lot of local homeowners refused to call when their Heating and Air Conditioning systems were running smoothly because they didn’t assume there could be any issues. However, this is when things could get out of control.
The Ad Told Us There Was No Central Heat or AC
When a bunch of my best friends and I decided to go vacation in a home in the mountains, I was ecstatic! I hadn’t been on a girls only trip in ages, so the idea of spending a lot of quality time with all of my best people under the same roof brought myself and others a lot of happiness.
Thankfully, there was someone else who was in charge of booking the home and all I needed to do was bring some snack food! The girl who booked us this home sent us all a link to the rental property so the crew of us could get gleeful for where the two of us were staying.
However, in my quick scan of our rental agreement, I noticed that it said there was no central heat or air. I instantaneously sent off a text to the rest of the ground and questioned the lack of heat. They were calling for snowfall during our time there and the thought of being without heat was dreadful. The home wasn’t refundable though, so the two of us made the decision to go and the two of us packed a bunch of winter clothes and blankets. When the two of us arrived though, the owner’s guide said that there was heat or AC available, it was just via a ductless mini split system. Technically, it wasn’t central heat and AC, however it was heat! All of the girls and I were so thankful for this! There were multiple ductless mini split units through the home and the two of us were surprised by how well they heated each area. Every one of us stayed perfectly boiling and cozy warm during our girls trip despite the lack of central heat and air.
I Can’t Skimp On The Air Conditioning Maintenance
Home ownership is a challenge sporadically.
As someone who has owned a home for the past 15 years, I’ve come to realize that there are some things not worth compromising on. For instance, I can opt out of having the garbage picked up and take my trash to the landfill myself to save myself and others a few bucks, although I can never opt out of Heating and Air Conditioning servicing and tune my Heating and Air Conditioning methods myself. I once made the mistake of thinking that I should control my Heating and Air Conditioning method any way I liked and that it would still run forever. It wasn’t until I experienced a broken A/C component during the Summer that I realized how I should never skimp out on Heating and Air Conditioning servicing. Heating and Air Conditioning professionals were skilled and trained to keep Heating and Air Conditioning systems running smoothly and efficiently all year around. I didn’t want to pay seventy five dollars to have my Heating and Air Conditioning methods tuned by an Heating and Air Conditioning professional twice per year, although I also didn’t want to have to pay multiple thousand dollars for a new Heating and Air Conditioning method because I was neglectful about hiring a Heating and Air Conditioning professional in the first locale. Heating and Air Conditioning experts were trained to find issues within Heating and Air Conditioning systems and there was nothing else I could do to find these things unless I myself became a certified Heating and Air Conditioning expert, however since I had no interest in the latter, it was wisest for myself and others to hire an Heating and Air Conditioning expert to do the task for me. It’s worth paying the small amount of money to keep my A/C method and my oil furnace in tip-top shape if it means that I don’t have to do it myself.
My Sunroom Needed Heating and AC
When I first moved into this old house, I was cheerful about the sunroom.
I fell in prefer with the sunroom when I first saw the videos of the place online and it was really the reason I chose to put an offer in on the house. Before closing finalized on the house, I had dreamt about this glorious sunroom and how I was going to utilize it all year around. Upon moving in, my preference for using the sunroom lasted a few weeks. However, the Summer heat was increasing each afternoon and the afternoon light added extra warmth to the section naturally. Even with a portable fan running, the sunroom got too uncomfortable and I couldn’t use it. I felt certainly discouraged because I was looking forward to going in the sunroom often, however here I was not using it because it was too hot. It made myself and a few others worried to guess about how I definitely wouldn’t get to use the sunroom during the Winter months either, because there was no heat to keep it warm. This is when I decided to install a new ductless mini split system! It was the easiest and most energy efficient way to heat or cool the sunroom without having to connect my ductwork to the space. The ductless mini split method can be turned on when I was using the section and it could be turned off when I wasn’t around. Once I had purchased the ductless mini split system, I called a Heating and Air Conditioning company and hired an Heating and Air Conditioning tech to come install it for me. I wanted to make sure it was officially installed before turning it on.
