Change has not always been my friend.

I think this is one of the reasons I find it tough to get on board with changing up my life.

I tend to resist change for the longest time until I finally have no alternative. It wasn’t quite that way with the smart thermostat but it was close. In fact, it took some indoor football for me to finally change. It’s funny that I’m the one that destroyed the old digital thermostat. And particularly ironic since I’m always hollering at my boys to stop banging around inside the house. But it was me that threw the errant pass which ended the life of the old thermostat. I was aiming at my son but my release was late. While the pass was a nice spiral, it zeroed in on the thermostat. I found it really funny that even though I threw the ball, my boys went running when the ball hit the thermostat. I was the one who had to explain that one not the boys. But, I called the HVAC company and they came out to put in the smart thermostat that my wife had wanted anyway. So I guess it all worked out. Initially, I still wasn’t so sure how I felt about the smart thermostat though. I mean, it felt so unnatural that I didn’t have to move the settings in order to save money. But sure enough, after a full month of having the smart thermostat, I ended up saving nearly 20 percent more on my heating and cooling costs. That’s enough good from that change that it’s making me consider other things that maybe I should consider changing.

I’ve really been going about this thing all wrong. That’s what I’ve discovered when it comes to the HVAC cooling where I live. I’m still sort of new to the region and fairly recently traded a gas furnace for the heat pump. I loved living up north and the gas furnace sure did a great job of heating our home each winter. But those winters finally just wore me down. I couldn’t keep dealing with all that snow and ice so I traded all the HVAC heating for all this HVAC cooling. However, I seemed to have traded the high cost of heating for the high cost of HVAC cooling. There is a four month stretch from June through September where the heat is overwhelming. There is just no way to do without air conditioning comfort in one’s home. And everyone has the heat pump going in the summer. But I recently learned that I was starting the HVAC cooling far too soon. Normally, I have been flipping the thermostat over to HVAC cooling once the temps start to climb in March. That has been my mistake. I recently learned from a native of the region to wait on the thermostat flip until later. This way, we allow our bodies to acclimate to the heat and the humidity. This makes quite a difference. Once the heat season is in full swing, I need much less HVAC cooling to be comfortable in my house. A thermostat setting in the 80’s during the day goes a long way toward saving a ton of money on HVAC cooling costs.

Given that our winters are mild, I was confident that we could get through this past one without a problem.

My wife and I signed up for the HVAC service plan when we moved here and bought this house. It made the most sense really given how busy we both are. Neither of us really wanted to have the responsibility to try and remember to call the HVAC professionals for HVAC maintenance. So the HVAC service plan fit our needs just perfectly. Additionally, we bought a house that had HVAC equipment that was about 8 years old. It wasn’t exactly the greatest HVAC equipment in the world either. So we wanted to make sure that we kept it in good order with HVAC maintenance on a semi annual basis. We hoped to get 10 years out of the HVAC unit but we came up short. The HVAC technician confirmed our suspicions when he came out to do the heating maintenance in the fall. Our HVAC cooling costs had spiked during the end of the previous summer. The HVAC technician told us that indeed, our heat pump was not going to last much longer. That heads up was all we needed. With all the supply chain problems, we thought it prudent to go ahead and get the HVAC unit replacement picked out and ordered. Given that our winters are mild, I was confident that we could get through this past one without a problem. And we did. But having that heads up was instrumental for us as we are now all set up to have the heat pump replaced in the coming weeks. That means that we go into the heat season fully prepared with brand new HVAC cooling.

We couldn’t be more pleased with the way this has all turned out

Where we live, there is a great deal of HVAC cooling going on. That’s just the nature of the beast around these parts. Our weather is pretty much outstanding for 8 months out of the year. But from June thru September, it’s brutal hot and not an easy place to enjoy. For many, the air conditioning gets kicked on toward the middle of March each year and doesn’t stop until nearly Thanksgiving. While that’s not quite the way we do it, I would say that we are in the minority. Yet, with that amount of air conditioning, you definitely want to have a reliable and efficient heat pump. We definitely have that in our heating and cooling equipment. When we built this house, HVAC was a priority. Both my wife and I are natives so we know how to deal with the heat season. That said, we do still rely on air conditioning throughout the summer to be comfortable. And air conditioning isn’t about comfort alone either. The HVAC cooling process is also balancing the humidity levels in the house so we are mitigating mold & mildew as well. Being that we HVAC efficiency is high on our list, we also chose to go with the most efficient and sustainable HVAC equipment. Our house has a geothermal heat pump for heating and cooling. This HVAC equipment, while a bit more expensive upfront, provides so much savings when it comes to all that HVAC cooling expense. We couldn’t be more pleased with the way this has all turned out. The geo heat pump is remarkable and our HVAC costs are minimal.

When it became clear that I wasn’t going to get my husband to leave here after he retired, I was disappointed.

Trading all this HVAC heating for all that HVAC cooling sounded just ideal to me. But, my husband just couldn’t make that connection. His family is all here and he just loves it here. We talked about other options and eventually, I just accepted that this was where I was going to live. But if I couldn’t have some of the things I wanted in retirement by moving to them, I was bringing them to me. While I was still going to have to deal with the cold of winter, I wanted to enjoy the rest of the year as much as possible. This is one of the major reasons that I had a big sunroom added to our house. I’m not as mobile as I once was and we live in a very hilly neighborhood. That makes getting out for my walks a bit more difficult. With the sunroom, I can enjoy the beauty of where we live and still be around the house. However, I also had a ductless heat pump added to the sunroom to max out the comfort levels. What I found out was something I didn’t expect. I’ve found a whole new appreciation for winter thanks to the HVAC heating in the sunroom. I can spend time out there and not feel as though I’m cooped up inside with the gas furnace running all winter long.

I am far, far from fancy.

In fact, I still wear hoodies and shirts that I loved more than a decade ago.

No, I’m not hip, trendy or in any way fancy. So, it’s sort of hard to believe that I have a garage with air conditioning. I can hardly believe it myself. Garages with HVAC are the sort of things you see on TV or on car shows. They aren’t for suburban dads who use the garage as a small escape from everything. That’s really what the garage has always been for me. I take after my dad in that respect. My dad wasn’t much of a sit in the recliner in the air conditioning sort of man. He was always tinkering with something at his work bench. He had a work bench in the garage and one in the basement. The one in the garage was the one he used almost all year and for most projects. The work bench in the basement was next to the boiler and he could stay warm in the winter. I wonder what he’d say about my set up. It was much like his really for years. But I finally got tired of sweating it out when the summer heat hits. We live in a region where the winter is not the problem. The summer heat is what you have to look out for. So the addition of the ductless heat pump in the garage has been wonderful. I can enjoy plenty of HVAC cooling all summer out there and still have my peace and quiet. Although, I do get some projects done at my workbench. But really, I’m just soaking up all the quality heating and air out there now.

I know that we are going through a specific period of time when it comes to the kids.

This is a fact that I understand and can accept as logical. Yet, I still am just barely dealing with the behavior of my children lately. They are in their early teens and just are mean to each other and border on being disrespectful to my wife and I. We live in such a nice house with quality heating and air and a pool among many other amenities. But the kids are always complaining. And when they’re not complaining, they’re fighting. Finally, my wife and I took a couple of days to discuss real solutions to these problems. We started with moving everyone around. The girls would no longer share a room and there just wouldn’t be a guest room. We moved into our son’s old room and moved him to the end of the house. That helped a great deal with the fighting. We then focused on one of the biggest complaints and that was the thermostat setting. Nobody could agree on the degree of heating and cooling. So we solved that problem with a call placed to the HVAC company. The HVAC professional came out to tweak our HVAC equipment so we could enjoy zone controlled HVAC. There are now five separate HVAC zones in the house so everyone can set there own thermostat. That too was a great move on our part. The house is much more peaceful now. And I happen to really love having the zone controlled HVAC in the house outside of stopping that argument.

It was sort of weird to see the look on my boss’s face when I told him that I was opting to stay working from home.

• This was absolutely the last thing he thought he’d be hearing from me.

And I understand how he felt this way. It was me who was hollering from the rooftops when the decided to close the office due to the pandemic. I was so not ready to leave the zone controlled HVAC of our offices for the air conditioning at home. But my choices were limited. Either work from home in my own air conditioning or be out of a job. Of course I chose to work from home. This wasn’t something that I took to but I think that was in large part due to attitude. But my feelings about working from home began to change after a few months. I got accustomed to the online meetings among other changes. But what I really came to appreciate was the fact that I really had control over my schedule in a new way. As long as I was there for meetings and such, I could pretty much work however I wanted. My work really improved which is saying something as I was pretty good back in the zone controlled HVAC. So when I told my boss that I was taking the company option of staying home, he was stunned but glad that I would still be churning out good work. The office at home is the equal of my old office now that I had a ductless heat pump installed inside what once was the guest room.

I could not believe what I did the other day.

I was using my vacuum to do some deep cleaning up around the house, and I somehow knocked the bag out of its socket and all this dirt, dust, grime and pet dander went all over the place! It made my house a complete bigger mess than it was and the air quality also went down the toilet as a result.

Thankfully, on the air quality side of things, after I cleaned up the mess I was able to turn on my whole home air purification system to help clear the air of what had just happened. If I did not have a whole home air purification system lord knows how bad this house would have been in terms of air quality. I had originally bought my whole home air purification system because the air quality in the local area is not that great. However, I never imagined that the whole home air purification system would come in handy for something as dumb as what I did with knocking the vaccum bag out of its socket and all over the floor of my living room! I will have to be much more careful in the future with this vacuum. I will not let this happen again. Because after all, even though I have the whole home air purification system it is still a major mess to have to clean up when everything dumps all over the whole darn place! But again I am thankful for the whole home air purification system helping to clean the air quality.

She was concerned because she had never smelled that smell before.

Our next door neighbors have been living in their house for the last 45 years. They have a furnace in their basement that is super old and super scary looking. I have been down in their basement numerous times over the years to help out with moving things or finding stuff for community barbeques. Let me tell you, I think that I would have a hard time sleeping in that house knowing that their scary looking furnace system was lurking around down there in the basement! It’s that bad. Anyway, the other night, the neighbors ended up having a really scary incident with that old furnace system that actually had nothing at all to do with how scary the furnace system actually looked. Instead, it had to do with the fact that the furnace was so old that it malfunctioned and parts of the furnace casing started to melt down! My neighbor told us that she woke up and smelled a strange burning smell coming through the heating vents in their bedroom. She was concerned because she had never smelled that smell before. She ended up going down into the basement to check on the furnace unit and that’s when she saw that it looked like the furnace was somehow melting! She raced up the stairs, woke up her husband, and called the fire department. They were able to contain the problem before the house caught on fire, but the whole thing was really scary. Now, they have a new furnace system that their HVAC company installed and it is much newer and safer.
